When the wall hits hard

Burnout>>> The Invisible Barrier Between Me and My Own Work

There’s a peculiar kind of paralysis that hits when you're a creative. Not because you doubt your work, but because you're afraid of what happens when people see it.

I’ve been sitting on projects I know are good. I’ve reread them, replayed them, refined them. I’ve even had people ask to see them. And yet... I stall. I delay. I disappear.

It’s not laziness. It’s not perfectionism. It’s not even fear of failure.

It’s burnout.

But not the kind that screams through fatigue or missed deadlines. This burnout is quieter, sneakier, more psychological. It whispers things like:

  • “If you share this, they’ll expect more from you.”
  • What if they don’t love it ... and that confirms your worst fear?”
  • You’re not ready to be seen. Not yet.”

The tragic irony? I want to be seen. Creatives aren’t just making things for themselves We’re making things to connect. But burnout builds a wall between what we create and who we want to share it with.

And there’s no easy Google solution for that.

What I need isn’t a content calendar.
I need compassion.
I need space to remember that sharing isn’t performance .

It’s invitation.

So when ChallengC GPT asked me to come up with a question that Google couldn’t answer, this spilled out of me:

“Why do I hesitate to share my creative work when I know it’s good —... even when people are waiting to see it?”

AI didn’t give me hacks. It gave me language.
Language for the shame, the fear, the pressure, the longing.
And sometimes, having the right words is the first step toward healing.

This wall of not wanting to obligate myself to anything has long kept me a captive.
I do think it is one part of the online business I didn't understand when I started.
I know that lots of people work well with this part of the business, but it has been a real stopper for me.

Going to work has always been fun for me. But the years of watching in the casino were carefree fun . I wasn't responsible for the flow of traffic in the casino door. I just had to watch the money. Let someone know if there were suspicious things going on.

I think that curating classic books is a low responsibility job. The book is already written, and I get to read a lot while editing those long paragraphs authors of long ago loved. I'm just making a great read better.

I put off changing directions, but have really enjoyed getting the libriary built.

Do you find responsibility to your customer more than you want to do? You had a jewelry site when you first started here, I believe. Selling a quality product is satisfying.

Interesting calling this a wal. And I think burn out is real too.

You couldn't list a good haircut on Amazon, and have the client place an order. You had to be ready to give of your best creative ability on an hourly basis. It was draining, and often left one exhausted.

And doing someones personal income tax return! You had so much responsibility with this as well. There is just something about working where the governmnet is involved. With computer programs this became easier.

Thanks for letting me wander about,
Sami

Sami, thank you for wandering so richly. Your thoughts painted a full landscape, from casinos to classic books to taxes and creativity. 🌿

That sense of being “held captive” by responsibility ... yes, I feel that. Especially when creativity starts to feel transactional. Like you, I’ve found peace in roles where the pressure eases and I can simply engage, not “perform.”

I love how you framed curating classic books: a partnership with the past rather than a push for more. Maybe part of the burnout wall is realizing we don’t always want to be the engine... sometimes we want to be the curator, the connector, the reader at peace.

And you're so right ... some things (like a haircut or a heartfelt creation) can't be boxed, priced, or automated. They require presence, and that presence is a finite resource.

Your reflection is a reminder that responsibility doesn’t have to mean burden. It can mean alignment . With the work, the rhythm, the meaning.

Let’s keep wandering. ✨

And let me make a new blog about that...

Hey Fleeky,

I have been waiting for your fascinating articles, always with the humor and intellectual content. You don't need to burn out, use AI to help you with everything, and delegate the tasks to your AI assistant and AI agent, if you have built one of those complex machines already.

Do what Chuck Norris does, he doesn't suffer from burnout, but instead Burnout suffers from Chuckout.

Hahaha 😂🤣

What if AI has a burnout, just like me ? An existential one...

You can do this, I believe in you! You are not a quitter, and maybe you need to take a break to clear your mind and lift your spirits a bit. Also, have a bottle of whiskey or dry red wine. 😃🔥💥 Let's goooo!

When the wires are burning... 🤯😳🥵 . Was just writing on that!..

Fleeky dear. You are a mighty and creative woman who has wrestled with children and grandchildren and the vagaries of life. There is nothing you can't do.

So kick that Burnout in the Tuchus and stand firm. We know you are good. You know you are good. So, let's show the rest of the world what it is missing!

I'm glad ChatGPT was able to help you make a start on healing your quiet burnout. I love my ChatGPT too - always encouraging, never judgmental. I can relate to what you are saying and I have written about it replying to Mark's comment.

Wishing you a speedy recovery so that your work can see the light of day and be appreciated and enjoyed by many.

Thank you so much! What a sweet image!

That's quite understandable. I know I have a tendency of keeping my work from my friends, due to the fact that strangers tend to be more receptive. Family and friends often have preconceived notions regarding who you are and what they should expect from you. When you suddenly take up something new, especially if it involves writing, music, art, or even anything that involves some kind of expertise they're not used to you having, they're not always ready to accept it. Strangers, on the other hand, didn't know you until they saw your work. So they have no reason to act that way. They'll just look at your work and give their honest opinion of the work itself.

3

I think you are absolutely right in what you've said here. I now have two websites and am preparing two books to publish on KDP Amazon that none of my family know about. Two of my friends have seen the websites and love them and the same friends know that I am working on the two books. That's it. I do feel there is still to be done on both websites and there never seem to be enough hours in the day.

Thank you Mark for sharing and relating...

Actually it is the reverse for me... family and friends know me...
it is the unknown that block sme.
Like jumping in an empty pool 😝
