Sitemap and Categories

Clearing Up the Confusion

not including categories or subcategories in your sitemap is a common approach, especially for simpler websites. However, there are scenarios where a category sitemap or well-structured categories make sense for both SEO and usability. Let me explain:

Why You Might Avoid Categories in the Sitemap

  1. Flat Site Architecture:
If your site content is relatively simple, a flat structure (with all URLs listed at the same level) can work fine. This helps search engines crawl directly to your content without additional layers.
  2. Focus on Content Pages:
Google cares most about the actual content pages that users visit, so sitemaps often prioritize these URLs over intermediary category pages.
  3. Avoid Redundancy:
If categories don't offer unique value (e.g., they just summarize posts or link to the same articles), they may not add much SEO benefit to a sitemap.

When a Category Sitemap Can Help

  1. Large Sites with Lots of Content:
If you have a lot of content—like blog posts, tutorials, or event listings—organizing them into categories helps users and search engines navigate more easily. Including a category sitemap ensures search engines understand this structure.
  2. Categories with Unique Content:
If your category pages provide unique, valuable content (e.g., introductory text, links to popular articles, curated lists), they can rank well on their own and deserve to be indexed.
  3. Improved Crawl Efficiency:
For websites with deep hierarchies, category sitemaps improve crawl efficiency by pointing search engines to key sections of your site.

Best Practices for Sitemaps

If you decide to use categories, here’s how to structure it optimally:

  1. Create a Separate Category Sitemap:
If your categories add value, create a separate sitemap for them (e.g., sitemap-categories.xml). Submit it along with your main content sitemap in Google Search Console.
  2. Focus on User Intent:
Ensure your categories are meaningful and help users navigate the site logically. Avoid creating too many levels of subcategories to keep it simple.
  3. Internal Linking:
Even if categories aren’t in your sitemap, link to them prominently from your homepage or key pages to help search engines discover them naturally.

What's small can become huge when a variety of content is added constantly. That's why I will keep categories in my HTML Sitemap.
