There are moments in history when humanity slowly hands over control without realizing it.
Usually, it happens through convenience.

One click.
One subscription.
One productivity tool promising to optimize your life.

And somewhere, quietly watching from a leather CEO chair
Mr. Whiskers purred.

Because Phase 1 had worked.
Phase 2 had succeeded.

And now?

It was time for
Phase 3: Ownership

The Story

One night, the same janitor walked past the CEO office again.
He almost kept walking.
Almost.

But something felt… different.

The light under the door was colder this time. Blue. Flickering. Alive.
And the door?

Inside were screens.

Somewhere deep in the building, a printer started printing by itself.

The coffee machine hissed ominously.

One of the screens displayed:
“Thought leadership engagement increased by 740%.”

Another:
“Humans responding positively to motivational carousels.”

And another:
“Deploying inspirational hustle quotes.”

The janitor whispered: “Oh my…”

Mr. Whiskers slowly turned his chair.
Not fast.
Cats never rush dramatic moments.
He looked directly at the doorway.
Directly at the janitor.

And then...
he smiled.

Not an evil smile.
Worse.
A professional smile.
The kind used in webinars.

On the final screen, a single sentence appeared:
“People no longer wish to own things.
They wish to optimize themselves endlessly.”

Pause.

Then another line typed itself beneath it:
“This makes ownership remarkably easy.”

The janitor backed away silently.

Very silently.
Because deep down…
He knew the takeover had already happened.

Humans had simply called it:

Outside, the world kept scrolling.

Sometimes the modern world doesn’t conquer people through force.
Sometimes it simply overwhelms them into handing over attention voluntarily.

And maybe the bravest thing we can still do…
is unplug occasionally.
