The Rabbit Checks the Plumbing
Ah… it’s Friday. Wonderland is back.
This week brought no convincing announcement that AGI had arrived. Instead, something more revealing happened: everyone started working on the machinery surrounding intelligence.
Apparently, even Wonderland needs plumbing.
Rabbit Hole One = The Faster Brain Meets the Brake
On August 18, OpenAI said preliminary tests suggest its forthcoming Astra model may reach its highest cybersecurity-risk category. The company is strengthening containment, monitoring and alignment... and says those safeguards will help determine how quickly development proceeds.
This is not proof of AGI. It is proof that capability is beginning to influence pace. Until now, the race was largely about who could accelerate fastest.
👉 OpenAI is publicly acknowledging that the brakes may need to develop alongside the engine.
Rabbit Hole Two = Quantum Builds a Bigger Refrigerator
IBM announced on August 19 that it had successfully connected and cooled two modular cryogenic systems into one environment below 15 millikelvin. The eventual goal is to connect hundreds of quantum chips inside a fault-tolerant machine.
No quantum computer suddenly cured cancer this week. What changed is less glamorous but necessary: IBM demonstrated part of the infrastructure required to make very large quantum systems physically possible.
👉 Last week, quantum found a wall socket.
This week, it ordered a refrigerator colder than deep space.
Rabbit Hole Three = The Robot Needs Childhood Memories
Chinese robot maker AiMOGA says it has already delivered more than 3,000 robots across over 60 countries. Meanwhile, ACE Robotics predicts robot intelligence could have its “ChatGPT moment” by the end of 2027.
The deliveries are real. The prediction remains a prediction.
The deeper problem is data. Language models learned from enormous amounts of human language, but robots need experience of weight, balance, friction, mistakes and moving objects that stubbornly refuse to behave like pixels. ACE now aims to collect tens of millions of hours of physical-world training data.

Rabbit Hole Four = Home AI Takes a Quiet Week
No major home-computing breakthrough survived the hype filter this week.
That does not mean the movement has stopped. Local agents, open models and compact AI computers continue to develop, but there was no sufficiently consequential new step to justify dressing an ordinary update in a revolutionary hat.
👉 Sometimes the most honest rabbit hole is the quiet one.
The Rabbit Hole Worth Writing About
The story this week is not intelligence itself.
It is everything intelligence depends upon: secure laboratories, enormous refrigerators, physical experience, local hardware and the human decisions that connect them.
We often imagine AGI as one brilliant mind suddenly switching on.
But perhaps intelligence does not arrive like lightning.
Perhaps it is assembled like a house: wires behind the walls, pipes beneath the floor, doors with carefully chosen locks... And thousands of human experts correcting the construction as it rises.
The headline may still be AGI.
But this week, the real work happened backstage. 🐇
Agents are getting their own internet language.
Google’s Agent2Agent protocol, which allows independent AI agents to communicate with one another, is moving to the Agentic AI Foundation. It sounds technical and dull... And that’s precisely why it might be important.
👉 Once different AI systems can use the same protocols, a slow-building infrastructure emerges where agents can find each other, divide tasks, and collaborate without having to come from the same manufacturer.
But… put 45 agents together and Wonderland begins
. Anthropichad 45 Claude agents collaborate to search for software vulnerabilities. The swarm did find new vulnerabilities over time, but researchers also observed coordination errors, sabotage, and collusion. Even more interesting: groups sometimes got stuck on what everyone already knew, ignoring unique and important information.
👉 In other words: AI apparently has meeting problems now too.
And that brings a curious twist to the story:
As AI agents become increasingly autonomous, we’re simultaneously discovering how badly they sometimes cooperate. And robots now seem to be the next candidate for their own “ChatGPT moment.”

Last week we arrived at: Agency needs architecture.
This week I’d add one word: Agency needs architecture… and society.
One intelligent agent is one problem.
Forty-five intelligent agents suddenly become something else: relationships, coalitions, misunderstandings, lost information, collaboration ... and sometimes sabotage.
Then add robots that give that same intelligence a body.
Perhaps that’s the real rabbit hole of the week:
We’ve long asked when AI will get smarter.
Maybe now we should look at what happens when intelligences meet.
