A Postcard From My Dream Home

(And no... this one is not submitted in the challenge)

Dear Pairing Algorithm,

Greetings from my Dream Home.
Apparently, we did rather well here.
#2. 😏

Which, considering that not long ago I was staring suspiciously at Kre8or's pairwise voting and muttering “but WHY that one?”, feels remarkably like winning.

Not quite the crown.
But close enough that I'm putting the kettle on. ☕

And more importantly, the results gave me something much more interesting than a number.
They gave me a clue.

Remember when I blamed the pairing?

Pairwise voting confused me at first.
You don't line up all the entries and choose your favorite.
You get two images.

This one... or that one?

Click.

Next pair.
And that changes things.

An image isn't being admired peacefully in a gallery. It is being asked to survive a tiny visual duel.

No essay.
No explanation.
No opportunity for the image to whisper:
"Wait! You haven't noticed my extremely clever detail in the lower-left corner!"

Too late.

The voter has clicked. 😂

Dream HOUSE versus Dream HOME

This particular challenge made that distinction beautifully clear.

A dream house can be spectacular architecture.
A dream home has to make somebody want to stay.

That became our guiding thought.

Not: How extraordinary can we make this?
But: Would somebody want to wake up here?

Warm light. Water. Wood and stone. A fire. Somewhere to sit. Somewhere to read. A view worth becoming lazy for.
Things that suggested life rather than merely design.

And when the results arrived, one of our three entries had climbed all the way to:

#2 — score 72.6 — 60% win rate.

The other two landed at:

#21 — 58.6 — 51%
#23 — 57.9 — 51%

Same challenge.
Same creator.
Same pairwise voting.

Very different journeys through the pairings.
Now that caught my attention.

60% isn't 64%... so why #2?

Here is another curious thing.
Some entries below ours had higher displayed win rates.

One had 64%. Another 65%.
Yet our 60% entry ranked above them.

So the leaderboard clearly isn't behaving like a simple: highest win percentage = highest rank

What exactly happens underneath?
I don't know.

And I'm resisting the temptation to put on a laboratory coat and announce that I have cracked the Pairing Algorithm. 🧪

I haven't.

But it reinforces something I've slowly started to appreciate:
A pairwise challenge isn't necessarily about creating an image that everybody agrees is objectively “best.”

It is about what happens in thousands of little moments when somebody sees:
A | B ...and has to choose.

So what did I actually learn?

Not a winning formula.
Thankfully.

I think formulas would make this rather boring.

But I do have a working hypothesis now:

First, make me stop.
Then make me feel.
Then give me a reason to stay.

At thumbnail size, an image needs a readable idea.
Then perhaps an atmosphere.
A path for the eye.
One memorable feature.
And only after that do all those lovely details get their chance.

That doesn't mean everything should become brighter, louder or more spectacular.

Sometimes the thing that wins your attention is quiet.
Sometimes funny.
Sometimes strange.
Sometimes so inviting that for half a second you forget you're voting and start mentally moving your furniture in.

That, I think, is what happened with Dream Home.

And now... a postcard arrived

Just as I was getting comfortable, Kre8or opened another challenge:
Postcards from Nowhere.

Oh dear.

There goes the afternoon. 😂

And this time I'm entering it with the pairings in the back of my mind.
Not because I think I know how to win them.
Quite the opposite.

Now I want to see whether our little hypothesis survives another challenge.

Does the thumbnail matter as much as I think?
Does immediate emotion beat intricate explanation?
Can an image be beautiful first and clever second?
What happens when Nowhere meets somebody else's Nowhere?

I have my entries in.

And that's all I'm saying about those for now. 🤐
The challenge is still running.

Wish you were here

So consider this a postcard from the previous challenge rather than a report from the current one.

The Dream Home results are in.
The Postcards are still travelling.

And if you've been watching the challenges from the sidelines, wondering whether to join...
come play.

Make something beautiful.
Make something ridiculous.
Make something that shouldn't exist.
Make the postcard you'd secretly hope to find in an old drawer with no explanation whatsoever.

Then throw it into the pairings and experience the peculiar combination of excitement, confusion and:
“WHAT? They chose THAT ONE?”

It's strangely addictive. 😏

And perhaps that's the real fun of it.

We're not only learning what other people choose.
We're learning what we choose when two images are suddenly sitting beside each other.

That has changed the way I look at my own work more than I expected.

So...

Greetings from my Dream Home.

The view is lovely.
The coffee is warm.

We somehow reached #2.

And somewhere out there, a postcard from Nowhere is currently making its way through the pairings.

Wish you were here. 💌

P.S. Ask me what happened after voting closes.

P.P.S. Pairing Algorithm: I'm still watching you. 👀
