The Gambler Knew What He Was Talking About

Here's a niche suggestion for some new WA music-loving member. Write about song writers.

I believe that song writers record the emotional and cultural history of a time by the images they choose to include in their lyrics. To me, these song-writers are the bards of contemporary civilization.

We can learn much about a people and their time on earth by studying song lyrics. Some lessons are light and trivial, and some are profound.

As an example, I'll use lyrics from the song, "The Gambler," written by Don Schlitz, country music songwriter. Don Schlitz, born in August, 1952, has won two Grammy Awards as well as becoming the first non-artist songwriter to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.

His song, "The Gambler, was made well-known by singer Kenny Rogers. Its lessons are pretty straight-forward.

Take the first stanza, in which the gambler tells us, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run."

You could apply this statement to your business, as this knowledge leads to important considerations in your business-making decisions. It could also apply to life in general. Rather than just bulldoze through life, we're better off with a good plan.

We're often told in WA that we will get further ahead if we focus on helping other people, not just zeroing in on how much money we can make.

The very next lines of "The Gambler" address this idea: "You never count your money when you're sitting at the table; there'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done.

Doesn't that line tell you a lot? Don't focus on the money. Instead, be alert to the nuances of the game and the people you are playing with, whether it be poker, business, or life.

Here's another line that gives us clues that could apply either to business or to life in general: "The secret to survival is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep." If you can figure out those two things, you will move forward in life or business exponentially.

One last example from this song. Especially at my age, I find this statement profound. "The best you can hope for is to die in your sleep." When all is said and done, no matter what choices you make, you come to the end.

You won't get out of here alive. If you can pass on to the next level without suffering or pain, what more can you ask?

Think about that.

You could learn a great deal about our world and our times by studying song lyrics-- and wouldn't it be great to learn about the writers of these lyrics? I believe it would be a great niche choice for someone.

Very thought provoking

Thanks -- Glad you read it.

Good afternoon my sister, long time no see. I pray all is well and that you got happiness going through that hard of yours. I agree, and I have always felt this way, the lyrics of songs opens the gateway to what's happening within our world at the time. It's almost like a music history book of the world. I can't think at the moment who actually wrote the song or what musical band it is however, the song is called the world is a vampire and the lyrics are on time. Taken into consideration of the greed and the lack of respect for human life within our world. Have a wonderful new week my sister with much happiness, and prosperity.

It is pretty amazing what songs can teach us, or illuminate for us. Good to see you.

Hi, Fran

Thanks for the shoutout!

I think a song lyrics niche is a wonderful idea! 👍

Isn't it funny that I can't recite the words to many songs in their entirety. That's probably because I'm too busy trying to analyze the various instrumental parts. Your post has made me realize that I'm missing out on a part of the song's message.

I remember when I was in the 7th or 8th grade, and we had to analyze the words of a song as an English assignment. I was given "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. I decided to make it a double assignment and added the song "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix.

I can still remember the look on my teacher's face when I played that Hendrix album on her little record player! It made me happy that I didn't take my mother's advice, who wanted me to play it for the class on my guitar. 😎

Keep on Rockin' 🤘

Thought you might agree that song writers would be a good niche. Thanks for commenting, Frank.

My pleasure, Fran! 😊

what a great article. Give so much perspectives.

Glad you find it good. Thanks for reading!

Thanks-Fran, I loved that song. I signed that song in American Sign Language. It is one of my favorite songs sung by Kenny Rogers. There is some truth in the song’s lyrics. What a great analogy applicable to our business.

I, too, love that song. How neat that you learned to sign it. I have some friends who are musicians, and on one of their numbers, one of them sings it and plays and the other one signs the lyrics. Very effective presentation.

I agree it's a beautiful hands language.

Very nice analogy, Fran. I love that song and the movies associated with it too.

Nicely laid out, my friend.

Jeff

I, too, am fond of that song. Can you tell?

I can, indeed. It is still one of the best ever, and quite appropriate to life in general, Fran.

Jeff
