May You Be Blessed With A Caring Community

Here is today's quote: “A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It's about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role.” – Yehuda Berg

How well this quote was brought home to me yesterday! As many of you know, both my Toyo heaters went out in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. That's not a good event in Alaska in the winter!

Fortunately, I have a wood stove in the office, and my first act upon getting up Wednesday morning was to build a wood fire. Then, I got on our Gustavus Buy, Sell, and Trade page in Facebook, and put out a call for help.

The day was amazing! Within less than an hour of placing the notice, friends called and came over with a wheelbarrow to bring me more firewood from my shed. They first had to dig out a path to the door; then they brought three big loads -- all I had room for -- to my house.

Another friend came along in time to help me haul the wood inside. Three different people came by to look at my stoves, and only one of them will receive payment... Today one of them has to come by and bleed the fuel line on one stove.

All day people called to offer assistance. One couple offered to bring me more firewood if my supply was low. Another is bringing me kindling at noon today. I was overwhelmed by the response from my small community.

What an excellent lesson! If you are fortunate enough to live in a place where people band together to help each other in times of stress, count yourself blessed. Such a group is more valuable than money.

We in WA can celebrate, as we have just such a community here ready to offer help and support. Have a question? Ask the community -- you will receive great answers. I have never seen an online community more supportive or helpful.

As one person, we can each do only so much, but when we add the strength of a varied community, we can conquer the world. The nice thing about community becomes the resources we can tap into because of these sharers of place.

I count myself as so fortunate, to have both this wonderful group of people who surround me at home and for the amazing group of folks who belong to WA with me and who reach out to me when I am in need.

Here's a quote from Oscar Wilde to end this post: The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” Reach out to someone today -- you may never know how much your support is valued.

Wow! This is so awesome. It's so good to know that people still have such love and care among fellow people, reaching out to give some help no matter how small or big it might look like. God bless each and every one of them that reached out to you.

I'll second those blessings. Now am in better shape than before the heaters quit.
I have lots of firewood in here, a couple of large, lovely boxes of cedar kindling, and two stoves that work perfectly.

When I was living up north, we had neighbors, who were there to help right away just like your friends and neighbors. Here in suburbia, where I live now, that’s not the case although I am sure people would be helpful if we knew our neighbors, the WA community reaches out and is always willing to help.
Jim.

I hear you, and am very glad I live in a small town.

Though the town has grown, when roads were first put in here, it became tradition to wave at everyone you passed, because you knew everyone. The nice thing is that tradition is still flourishing. Makes it interesting when I go to Juneau...have to remember not to wave...lol...

Very well said, Fran...thank you for sharing!

Thank you, Mike.

Sounds like living in a small town.
Some things we take for granted until a crisis-
Glad you are on the road to getting fixed.
Best wishes
Sami

Thanks, Sami. I, too, am glad it's almost all taken care of.

Community is everything...! Glad you got it covered, Fran!

Rudy

Me, too...what a day!

You're a treasure here in this wonderful community, Fran
So relieved it is now sorted

Thank you very much! Believe me, I'm relieved as well -- slept well last night.

That's lovely
Nothing better than a restful sleep :)

My friend, Vince, just brought me two big boxes of cedar kindling, chopped in long pieces and stacked upright. That will last for a while! Now the room smells like cedar.

I am certainly blessed.

That's so heartwarming, Fran
That's what food friends are for.
Stay blessed ;)

It's not just heartwarming -- it will help warm the whole body! And, my friendly repairman is here to bleed the line to the heater. Yay!

Yay!
Heartwarming all over ☺️

My repairman friend just left, and when I asked him what I owed him, he said, "nothing." Amazing...that means that, for all the help I've been given in the last couple of days, there's been no charge. Blows me away...and gives me yet more reasons to feel gratitude.

I know that feeling, Fran
It tells us that you have genuine friends who are there with you in thick and thin.
So many things we have to be grateful for

Great to have a community there and here for support. Hope everything works out for you.
Cheers
Rob

Thanks, Rob -- It seems to be working out.

That is always good, Fran, and I am sure that you have been helpful to many of them on occasion too. That is definitely how a good community works.

Jeff🙏

Of course, you are right.

I am so glad that all was taken care of.
