How to be an online success. Managing you.
So you want success. More specifically you want to be successful online. Well, how do you get to be an online success?
We should start by looking at the elements that make people successful in most anything. There are a few that I would like to specifically point out.
The thing about these traits or actions is that they work. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to be an online success or a brick-and-mortar success. Take the time and go through my post. At the end please comment and tell us all what you need to work on to be more successful in your online business.
Managing Time
Every successful person has a calendar. They have a watch too. And a cell phone, a wall clock, a clock on their computer (some even make it big).
But why is it that so many of us have a hard time keeping track of our own time?
The successful ones have more than just plenty of ways to watch their time. They plan, set times for work and meetings, make time for their home life.
They build a schedule……..
WHAT!?! Why? We are working online, in our own home, usually around other work and life activities. A schedule to write something and post it on a webpage that I am just doing to try to make passive income?
Well, do you want to make that passive income? A website is like any other business. It takes time and effort. So, your challenge is now to fit that website into your week like any other part time job.
How many hours a week does a part time job require for the minimum? Decide how much of that you are willing to put into your work.
Now take your life that you already have a schedule for (or how would you get anything done), and find the times and days that your new part time job will take up. From here you just have to treat it like a job. Simple huh?
Accountability
It’s your business. Do you think that a fairy is going to come and make your page magically pop up on the first few pages of google and other search engines?
There is no such thing. There are ghost writers on any number of sites, but you have to be aware that you will still need to monitor the work and make sure it meets your standards for your site. Not to mention, you will have to answer comments, post said ghost-written work, and maintain an active site for google to want to rank you anywhere good.
Dang, no slacking off here. Time to take accountability of your success. And of your failures. I know, it’s so much easier to sweep them under the rug.
Once you have your schedule, make a set of goals for each week. Make yourself accountable for achieving each one.
I don’t care if your accountability is writing a post and having a bar of chocolate, or even two posts then playing video games for the rest of the day.
Give yourself a reason to complete each day worth of work. You have to remember you are building a business, so the money reward may be a while out yet.
Remember Failure is part of Success
So your first site made a few dollars, but in the end was a flop. Now you know several things not to do for your next site. And probably a few good things that you will want to do more of on the next one too.
Think about how much time it took you to set up your first site. How much hard work and effort it was to do it that first time. Why was it so hard?
It was so hard because you were learning!
How much time do you think it will take you to set up your second site? How about your third? I think my point is clear. My guess is that you will have your second site up and making money in at least half the time it took you for your first site.
I also am pretty sure that it would be a safe bet to say that you are already making more money than you did on your first site. Could it be because you implemented the things that were successful from your first site? Or maybe because you left out the things that you found were causing you to fail?
Take the time to learn from your failures and maybe they will lead you to success.
Go beyond the Job Description
If you like to do more than just what your boss says, say I. I!
Any person who moved up from the lowest rung on the ladder will tell you that they did it by doing more. More than what was just required of them. Even more importantly, doing all of it well.
It’s fine and dandy if you are doing more than what you are told to do. But who is going to want you to move up anywhere if everything you do is sloppy and without quality? No one.
Your job at the moment is to build an online business and be successful at it. The only thing that would have you going beyond the job description here is how quality your work really is.
If someone in your niche has more quality content, then they will be ranked better. It’s that simple.
Conclusion
I just listed four traits or things that successful people do. Now, what is holding you back from being an online success story? Let me know in comments if maybe there is one you could work on.
I know I have to work on every single one of these things. Maybe I will start using a piece of chocolate a day to get my work done. But I can only have it after I have finished my work. What do all of you think of that?

I'll take that chocolate you mentioned, but make it dark chocolate instead. Time management, I'm realizing, can be challenging. When you have a handle on your schedule it can feel as good as a clean desk because now you have time (and space) to work.
Great post today, Brittaney. Thank you for sharing it.
All the best,
Sue
Thank you for the comment Sue. I love dark chocolate too. One of my biggest challenges is time management. A clean desk and a good schedule can be the best two things in the world.
Good post Britt with a ton of good information. I'm still working on that time management thing and if you see that fairy send her my way please.
I am looking for her Craig! I keep hoping that in the middle of the night she visited me and all of a sudden I am at the top of google. But things don't work that way. And I we all could use a training course in time management (or a few for me).
LOL...a piece of chocolate, I think I will go the healthier way - a carrot!!
Great post, Brit.
Yes, being a success at anything means consistency, perseverance, accountability and so much more...and yes, time management is indeed key.
Thanks for sharing.

I agree. We cannot go into something expecting to get anything out of it for nothing. It takes all of these traits and so much more to say that you have what it takes right off. Most people (like me) have to strive for years to learn these things.
Great post Brit! So energetic and fun and to the point. If I find that fairy might she do windows too??
Great job. It is in our hands to make it happen. On the NOW Plan.
I agree. Though I really want that fairy to exist for all search engines, she does not at the moment. So it is up to us to determine our own success by the time and energy we put into our goals!
Brittaney,
I am still working hard on time management. It is not something that comes naturally for me. You are absolutely right, having a schedule and having accountability are very important factors in determining your success.
Lisa
I am still bad at time management myself. Maybe it is because I have so much right now due to circumstance? A schedule helps but I think I might have to get a little more in depth with it. Like planning how my time blocks are going to be spent. My biggest thing is accountability. I need to find a method that works for me until I see some $.
Hi Britt. Thanks for sharing these fundamental principles which are essential in any discipline in life. Being part of the group has help me greatly with each of the attributes that you've mentioned here.
Regards,
Zola
Though I still need a lot of work, the group has helped me in growing in each of these areas too. I have to say Wealthy Affiliate has helped me the most though. Particularly in the going beyond the job description. Everyone has taught me what good content is and how to connect with potential customers through the internet.

I'm seriously thinking of getting a timer, because just looking at the time doesn't always propel me to shift gears when I need to.
I think you've earned a double dose of chocolate for the week, Brittaney!
Thank you V! I am happy to hear that you got so much out of my post. I am starting to use a timer myself. It is kind of helping. I need to get used to following it though!
