Should you use profanity in your blog?

I'll be brief with this.

Some of my favorite bloggers use profanity (bad words) on their blog content. I understand its their website and they blog as they please. But as a reader, I find it off putting to find profanity on a blog post, especially when I'm looking for information I need in a hurry.

Perhaps its because I am now a blogger myself and its just not the right etiquette in this business or any business, for that matter. After all, when was the last time you went to the grocery store and had an employee cuss in the middle of a conversation with you?

Some audiences don't mind the cussing, though. It all depends on the niche.

Your Thoughts

What do you think? How do you feel about profanity on blog posts? I'd really like to know if its just me who feels this way. Really appreciate the comments.

I find the issue with profanity is often the tone of voice it is said in. Some people offend and some don't have this effect. However in the written word you can't hear the tone.

Also with profanity it just appears that the user doesn't have a very good grasp of words. The same thing can be said in non-profane words and often have much more effect.

These users use it so much their articles are really boring.

I think it all depends on who your target audience is. I don't believe it's necessary though in most cases.

I agree with you. Years ago, when I was in the rat race, I used to tell folks, "there are better words to use." If for no other reason, I just think it takes away from the author. Anyone else wanta comment?

I agree with you. I don't think it is good to use profanity in blog posts. It's a business.
However, like you said, maybe some niches it's the way that audience communicates? Don't really know.

Exactly. Perhaps a manly, grow-some-hair-on-your-chest type of blog would likely integrate cussing in its content.
