college rant

today i went to school to finish a project that is due next week, so as i am sitting there doing an "art" sculpture i really do have to wonder why 99% of what we learn in college has no immediate practical application in your daily life and does not even prepare you to get a job. you see my problem with college is that there are millions of students out that that finish a program and end up working at burger king with a giant student debt. now i do understand why people do go to college because it is the most secure way to MAYBE earn money one day and improve their life’s . however i do think that the system its designed in a way that many students are doomed to fail. Ill give you my example , I am studying so called “art” now it is known that in the art industry it is almost impossible to get a job , and if you do is a starving artist job, hence in a sense I am to blame for “following my passion” (I do deeply regret this btw don’t go into art if you have no idea how to market urself , I am so bitter towards art I stopped drawing at all, I completely gave up). Anyways back to the main topic , in a program such as art I would say 50-60 of the program should be focused on marketing because of the nature of the business, there are literally artist that have sold “shit in a can” (this is a real piece of art google it) all because they knew how to market themselves but instead im sitting here doing useless sculptures and wondering what the hell am I doing with my life

Btw art wont even be my niche, but just saying, not saying college itself its evil but it is the way the system is design , college should give students alternative skills to make money in case they cant find a job

Btw yesterday I saw a girl that was working as a cashier after studying 3 years in my same art program how promising. Btw im looking to change college program any suggestions to something that may help an online business]

I couldn't agree more. I really couldn't. I'm currently attending college now, and I'm getting badly burned by student learns and useless knowledge. Unfortunately, the almighty hammer of "Parents" leaves me with no choice.

This post really, really resonated with me, because it almost describes exactly my attitude towards classes I've taken. When I first started going to college, I wanted to become a 3D Modeler - Design models for characters in animated movies or in video games.

So, naturally, when I went to college, I expected to actually be learning stuff relevant to my major. Unfortunately, instead of hopping on the computer and learning 3D modelling hands on in a classroom setting, I'm forced to go through 8 pre-requisite courses. I took 2 of them my first semester, 3D Design and 2D Design. Based on the course description, syllabus, and discussions I'd had with other students, I assumed these would be computer courses - 2D animation perhaps, and 3d modelling.

Unfortunately, after beginning the classes, I learned two things.

1. The art teachers at my college are total jerks. They are arrogant, pompous, just about every word for jerk you can think of. They think they are better than their students, a horrible attitude to have as a teacher.

2. I would never, ever, not once use the "Skills" (Pottery? Cutting my fingers on wire to make a "Sculpture"? Really???) I was learning in these classes, and I wouldn't get to learn the skills I actually wanted to learn for several more years. By then, the information would be outdated.

Sorry. Since I'm in a similar boat currently, I felt I should weigh in here.

omg so so so true .... so ur a student as well? im am so in the same boat ... yet again changing career trying to convince my mom of letting me start my so called business but hey college vs a website .... guess it wont happen

Yes, exact same issue here. My advice? Don't try to convince her, it's pretty useless. They believe what they want to believe. Instead, prove it to her. Work on your website as often as you possibly can in your off time. If you work on your website every day and write good posts at least 5 times a week, within a year you will likely be making enough money to drop out of college and move out anyway.

Just pick up as many tips and tricks as you can over that period of time, and constantly try to improve.

Right now, I'm just trying to stay in College to continue staying with my parents, so my website can start making me money within the next year.

Don't say it won't happen, because it will if you keep going. I'm already so excited because my website traffic has tripled over the last 2 weeks :)

ohh nice how many visitors are you at right now?

Well, last month I did almost no work on my site so I didn't get a lot of daily traffic to begin with, but since starting to write frequently again about a week and a half ago, my traffic went up to 15 people a day, then 20 people a day, then 35 the next day, now 45 today.

The modern university system is not only outdated but had been reorganized to scam millions of students out billions of dollars. It's a disgusting sham.

There is a correct way to go about using college to your advantage but from what I see the vast majority of people won't need to go. You need experience, not books.

WA is a great first step to begin learning AND gaining experience at the same time. You're in the right place and if you commit to it, you will be marketing your passions in no time.

ya yes very true... college used to be thought by professionals in the industry not any more =(

They say "those who can't... teach." Compare that to the trade industry schools and vocational technology centers where it is generally required for a professor to have 1) at least 10 years of experience in the field he is teaching and 2) a diverse board of advisers with varying specialties who are currently active within the industry.

WA is more like a trade school... and a good start to your business! :p

Yup true im thinking of swapping to a vocational class in ecommerce....i mean i still need to study...because im not financially self sufficient

I honestly don't think you will need the class if you follow through all the WA training.

My degree was in Anthropology. It was a labor of love but not very useful for finding a job. I am one course away from my Master's now in Ocean and Coastal Studies but that is actually useful due to climate change, erosion, overpopulation along our coastlines, pollution, ocean acidification, fish farming, water shortages etc. I work in the Water realm already so it is in line with my career. It has taken me 10 years however since it is so darn expensive and I can only take one class at a time!

I want to make a real second income and have the option to work for myself.

well i agree, I absolutly dont need it. However, since I cant stop studying might as well look for sum that has some connection to the online world

Great comment.
