Vacation-ish on the other side of the pond

I didn't plan on taking a trip this summer. It was a last minute decision. And when I say last minute, I booked the flight 2 days before flight time.

My mother hasn't been well and seemed to be failing after a fall. She is quite elderly but she's a feisty as hell. So I made the quick decision to take a trip to CT to help my brother out with things.

I love coming here no matter what time of year it is. Summer is certainly a great time to be here. I brought my laptop so I could get my work done. I've fallen into a good rhythm. I head down to the library in the morning, get my work done then I'm free for the afternoon to visit my mother or hang out with friends.

It hasn't been all work and no play, though. Last Saturday I went kayaking with a friend out in the Long Island Sound. God! It was gorgeous! Made me long for the days when I lived here and did that kind of stuff! We were out there for a few hours. We pulled the kayaks up on shore and swam for a while and even jumped off rocks! I did learn one lesson the hard way. The mind is willing but the body is weak! I'm just not as agile as I used to be and came back with a few bruises and a sunburn. But hey, it was a blast!

My mother is now on the other side and we think she'll be home in a week so it's time for me to head back to Ireland. I have grown used to my little life here of working during the week, seeing friends on the weekends, etc. but it's not really a life is it?I don't have to pay bills here like rent, car payment, medical insurance, etc. I'm staying somewhere for free and using a friend's car to get around.

But suddenly I feel under pressure that my time here is now so short! I'm trying to remember all the touristy things I like to do when I come here and now I have only a week left! So much to do and suddenly so little time!!

The Atlantic Ocean holds a very special place in my heart. I've canoed in it, swam in it, pulled lobster pots, waterskied in it, fished in it, gone clamming in it, enjoyed it's beautiful sunsets, and spent lots of time on it's beaches.

I believe that the ocean has medicinal qualities. It always rejuvenates me and I always find peace when I'm on a beach.

When I do get back to the ol' sod, I think I'll start funneling some money away into a kayak fund! :D

Hope you all are finding time to enjoy your summer!

Thanks for sharing your story. It brought back some of my fondest memories. I won't go into details, but only add the following.

I lived near the ocean on the west coast for a number of years, although I was raised near the Atlantic. Being at the ocean wherever I have been, which includes Europe and in the Middle East, always blesses my soul.

Have a joy-filled weekend, and for the rest of your stay on this side of the pond.

Is something about the ocean when you look far beyond. It does something to your mind. Maybe is the peace of not seeing anything. Is a place I frequently visit when I am stuck in my business. Go for the kayak, it would be a great spend.

Thank you, Lazyblogger! I totally agree with you!

Great post Alanna, it is always fantastic to return to where you spent many days enjoying nature’s gifts to us. I am also on vacation (annual) and back where I started life. Enjoy what is left of your vacation. The memories will always be there.

Hey Harvey. I still have a handful of friends here that I consider family. We never lost touch and always spend time together when I'm here. It's been a gift!

We're glad to have you over here Alanna!

Thanks! I hate the thought of leaving!

Lovely post Alanna! Glad your Mother has pulled through! Barb

Thanks, Barb. She's pretty stubborn so that has really come in handy in this case!
