Scams Online

There are so many scams online today that I wanted to share the ones I have been personally seeing (especially in FB groups).

Bitcoin Scam

People will try to get you to sign up under an account manager for Bitcoin. The account manager will ask for personal information (access to bank account and CC account).

The account manager will pay for you to start and say that you have your first payment ready and will be recieving in a few days.

The payment goes through! They turned the money into $3,000! What a relief! However, the payment was made to you on "accident" and you must return the money IMMEDIATELY.

So lets say you return the money immediately because you are being pressured now to return it ASAP. Your sensitive info you gave is being used against you now.

If you pay back the money immediately, you will notice that later the payment that was "accidentally" sent to you has been returned. Now you are in debt $3,000.

Work From Home Scams

With unemployment at a high rate right now, many are searching for real opportunities to work from home.

Do not join FB groups to look for real opportunities to work from home. You will find that people are hiring and want to do a "text interview."

First, even though a lot of employers had to go to work from home, the interview process still remains professional and legit.

A real hiring company will call you, and set up a video interview. The companies who i have reached out to that have work from opportunities will say they are doing "text interviews."

It's a surpirse that I match every single one. They then say you need to pay for work equipment and they ask the payments to be made through paypal or people you dont know.

If you have to pay FedEx, you will not be paying one individual for the fee. You should be paying on the FedEx site.

If you are asked to pay someone via PayPal or CashApp, and whatever other apps there are - do not send money to people you dont know. Even if it's for a job.

How to find legit remote positions

It is important to note that if you are looking for a real telecommuting position, the keywords you want to look for are:

  • Remote
  • Telecommute

The hiring industry hardly uses the term "work from home," and will post their positions on job seeking platforms.

Job seeking platforms for finding real opportunities:

  • Indeed
  • ziprecruiter
  • Flex Jobs
  • Up Work (freelancers)
  • + more

Now there are some recruiters for companies in FB groups looking to recruit new people. However, the majority in the FB groups are scams.

On the other hand, if you are looking for affiliate networks, then joining relevant groups is beneficial for that reason only.

Stay Safe

It is imperative that you remain focused and know how to recognize scams. Never give out your sensitive information.

If you are looking for a real opportunity to work from home, do not use FB as a source to find that.

If something sounds fishy, or to good to be true - it usually is. If you do get recruited on FB for a "real" remote position, then call the company they say they are with.

Call the company to make sure that person is affiliated with the company before you proceed with anything.

Scammers are getting trickier and trickier, so we must be diligent in fact checking and verifying affiliations with companies.

This may sound tedious, but I promise you - you will not get scammed if you do this.

There are so many scams going around, that it would take pages and pages to write them all out.

If you have any questions about an opportunity that you think could be a scam - treat as it is one and be careful.

We should all be extra vigilant, Elise!

Jeff

If it looks, sounds, smells like a SCAM, it is.

Great post Elise.

Thank you, Joe. The more and more scams I see online - the more worried I get.

I hear you. Even with the best antenna up and going to sniff out scams, sometimes they come so innocent looking and still snooker us in.

But....'Damn the torpedoes, FULL SPEED ahead', so said a very daring Navy Admiral!
