Using Grammarly

Do you feel like your grammar could use improvement? Are you confused about when to use less or fewer? Have commas got you down?

There's an app for that. It's called Grammarly and you can get it as a Chrome extention. This is perfect for when you're an expert at cooking, sports, or math but a bit rusty with English grammar conventions.

Here's a screenshot showing how it works.

As you can see, it is a bit more robust than the checker in Site Content. Above, you see how it handles a spelling error. But wait! There's more!

This is what it looks like when it catches grammar errors. You can click to correct it but the explanations Grammarly gives will also help you improve your content writing skills. This is especially useful for people whose first language is not English. There's even a setting so you can correct for UK, US, and Canadian English.

You can use the Chrome extension but if you prefer, you can paste your content here instead.

Grammarly will want you to register but it's a free account to do the basic checks.

Hope this was helpful for some of you!

I think it's a great tool. I use it all the time. Not perfect, yes but it's correct more often than not.

There's been a lot of discussion about this in various posts :-)

Yes, it can be helpful but you cannot rely on it 100%. Non-native English speakers need to beware of its shortcomings, which may be as difficult as brushing up their English manually:-)

Yes, it's not perfect. However, Grammarly at least gives a starting point. Anyone who's not sure about a Grammarly correction can research the rule it's cited and see what to do from there.

I'm a firm believer in learning by doing and research is a great help because it's task-oriented.

You're absolutely right!

My concern is that people take the suggestions as gospel. It'll be right more often than it's wrong but unless you know the rules you won't know :-) So uses do need to check.

I think Grammarly is great but for me, it doesn't work in Site Content when I write posts. I write my posts in Site Content and check them with Grammarly in Wordpress after first published.

Do you have the same issue, Dee?
-Nick

I always edit my posts in Wordpress after using Site Content. It lets me do things like adding my tags and keywords so doing additional checks from there is not really an issue for me.

Because I'm also a writer, I'm used to tasks like that. But I have noticed on Site Feedback and Site Comments, that many people could use additional proofreading.
