Train Trip Vacation
This is the view we'll have as we ride on the California Zephyr from San Francisco to Detroit starting a 3 week visit with grandchildren in southern Ontario, Canada. We haven't seen the kids in person for almost 4 years so we are excited, to say the least.
We will not have internet on the train. For much of the time in Canada, we will be staying at my cabin on a lake. The closest wifi will be about 12 miles away. "Unplugging" for 10 days will give us time to catch up with 3 of our 5 grandchildren. What a joy!!
When I was 11 years old, in 1960, on some random impulse, I put 4 Canadian silver dollars in a little leather change purse. I have kept them all these years. I am giving each grandkid one of those dollars. They're worth more than a dollar, but I am hoping they will be keepsakes.
On our trip home, we are taking the Southern Chief from Detroit to LA and then the Coast Starlight up the coast of California to home. It should be an amazing trip. While I am gone, don't forget to "keep on fishin."

This is something my family has always wanted to do. Can you share the cost? We'd be coming from the Carolina region but I want badly to visit the west coast and the redwoods!

I envy you going on this extended train trip with your grandkids. No doubt, this will build a lot of memories.
You commented on my post about my granddaughter. I have an update you may find interesting. Last Thursday my wife and I took Diana on a day train ride to Santa Barbara and back. Guess what train we took. The Coast Starlight!
We have done this trip several times before but went on the Surfliner. This time the Coast Starlight schedule worked better for us.
The observation car was amazing. That is the picture you used in your post. The best part of this journey is when the train goes along the coast and comes very close to the edge. I love seeing the ocean and also riding trains. This exceeded both expectations.
You will enjoy the Amtrak trains. Make the most of your time with your grandkids. Do write about this trip in a WA Blog when it is over.

You are doing a very special trip and I am sure your grandchildren will be so happy with keeping the silver coins to reminisce about.
I use to work on tourist trains and love train travelling, I think it is something in the heritage.
Your cabin is so beautiful and I agree on the break from being connected to everything is special although I would still find some way to hear music.
