ChatGPT Banned in Italy!
So, Italy is the first Western country to ban ChatGPT.
The Italian watchdog said that not only would it block OpenAI's chatbot but it would also investigate whether it complied with General Data Protection Regulation.
There are also concerns in that it has no age verification in place.
It's already banned in China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

Wow! Pretty crazy stuff.
There was an open letter signed by lots of big guns in tech warning to pause development of these AI tools until the unintended consequences could be looked at!
Nothing less than subversion of society is the worry.
In my mind, the problem with unintended consequences is you don't know what they are until they happen!
Hi Diane
Thanks for this, the first four countries you mention banning ChatGPT don’t surprise me at all.
Italys ban does.
I asked ChatGPT if it could operate in Italian and it responded thus:
As an AI language model, ChatGPT can theoretically understand and generate text in any language for which it has been trained. However, the currently available versions of ChatGPT have been primarily trained on English-language data, and therefore perform best when communicating in English. That being said, there are ongoing efforts to develop and train AI language models in other languages, and it is possible that ChatGPT or similar models will be available in other languages in the future.
Rick
so does that mean bing and possibly google will be banned in italy...
i take it they are a bit scared of the power of it....
it is a fantastic tool...
Unfortunately for me Catherine, even with VPN, access to openai is still denied. Maybe because China is not listed in the countries supported by the openai platform.
Luckily though, I can now again access the new Bing chat after it was included in the Win11 update.
Yes Rowe I am aware of that in China but in Europe the Italians can access it with VPN's
Here in the US there is currently a bill being pushed that would make using a VPN a felony with minimum prison sentence, up to a million dollar fine and forfeiture of assets. It's called the Restrict Act and has large bipartisan support. Some are calling it the Internet Patriot Act.
It is absolutely crazy.
I hope folks wake up soon and quit squabbling over small issues meant to keep us divided and realize how much they are taking away freedoms and rights.

The age verification thing is important. I think this type of tool is inevitable. I like it and use it. The research aspect is amazing. I am not sure, other than in countries that do not like the open spread of information, why it would be banned. The internet its has changed the face of communication. It was absolutely revoluntionary unique not too many decades ago.
