It's All Your Fault! The Blame Game

The Blame Game

Most people are quick to affix blame on someone or something, usually to deflect from themselves.

We even have music to help us assign the blame.

"Blame it on the Rain" (in music, but I actually heard this in regard to a car accident someone was in)

“Don’t blame me, love made me crazy"

"Blame it on the Night"

"Don't blame me!" (this one is pretty common in music)

"Blame it on the Goose" (really? a goose changed your life?)

"Blame the world" (why not? That covers everything!)

"Blame it on the streets"

"Blame it on the stars"

"Blame it on the Boogie" (Yes, the Jackson's sang that it was all because of the music, whatever "it" is)

Life is full of choices

My kids will tell you that I strongly encourage (see also, "expect") them to take personal responsibility for the choices they make.

But life is like that.

  • If you choose to speed down the road, who can you blame for that speeding ticket?
  • If you choose to eat a bag of chips and then get a stomach ache, can you really blame the chips? Maybe it's the fault of the company that made the chips?
  • Some people choose to stay up late; they then have trouble functioning at work in the morning. Can they blame their work company for making them come in early?
  • We've even seen lawsuits based on such blame.
  • "The coffee was too hot and I burned myself trying to drive while drinking it."
  • "The sign didn't say that I should drive slower when the road was icy."
  • "It was raining really hard and the sidewalk was slippery. I fell when I was running to get into the store." (yes the store was to blame because they didn't provide a way to enter when it was raining)

The blame game goes on, probably forever.

And in fairness, sometimes the other person or business is truly at fault. But many times it's just that we should have made better choices.

  • Drive within the speed limit.
  • Eat reasonable portions and choose good foods.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Check the temperature of the drinks and also probably avoid sipping when going down that busy highway.
  • Know that the posted speed limits are for normal conditions. Rain, Ice, and even heavy traffic conditions call for adjustments.
  • Avoid running when the walkway is slippery.

You are free to make choices,

.......but you cannot choose the consequences.

“The choices that we make in our life, indeed determine the kind of results that we experience and the quality of the life that we live.” – Sumeet Jain

However, the reverse situation is also true.

When you make good choices, the results are usually good consequences!

For those of us at WA, those might include:

  • Read through each lesson and complete each task.
  • Interact with others on the platform. Ask and answer questions.
  • Read through the posts as you have time. Comment where appropriate.
  • Use features such as site comments and site feedback.
  • Dedicate time each day (or week, if need be) to work on your website and posts.
  • Use social media to help boost your posts.
  • Keep learning! Spend time on webinars, trainings, and other features.
  • Take notes or find ways to keep everything flowing.

“We all make choices, but in the end our choices make us.” ― Ken Levine

And when you make those good choices and the results are good, you can then also take the credit:

I did the work and

.....I am responsible for the outcome!

That outcome might be:

  • more followers on your site
  • acceptance into affiliate programs
  • actual sales from your posts and links
  • or whatever else your goals are.

Of course, we are all thankful for the incredible training, useful tools, and the WA community.

All of those factors (thanks Kyle and Carson for starting WA!) helped us toward our success. I never underestimate their importance in my journey.

But the fact remains that for all of those factors to help you,

............You Need to Make Good Choices!

One of my favorite radio personalities, Dr. Laura, has a catchphrase at the end of each program.

"Now Go Do The Right Thing!"

Whether you enjoy her program or not, that phrase does sum up our choices in life.

Passing the buck! I've seen so many do it, not owning up instead blaming the weather, or someone else.

A friend of mine had a sign in the office and she would point to it when things went wrong.

"Don't blame me for your short falls" She had that message typed in large bold letters.

Love that sign!
Thanks, Yvonne.

This post is a good reason why I am here. Today, I was going through my emails from an old account and saw an offer for a prominent marketer selling a lifetime of products ("I'm retiring, get all of my training") for $49. I made the purchase and then went into the back office to see what I had just bought.

As I am going through some of the training modules, I realize that none of the training will actually help me unless I have an actual business or product to sell. So, I searched "what to sell to make money as an affiliate marketer" in Google and found an Ad for Wealthy Affiliate. Normally, I bypass the ads and look for a website in the top 10. However, I didn't do that this day. I clicked on the Ad.. and now I am here, reading posts that personally resonate with me.

To get to the point... For many years, I have played the blame game. Why am I not as successful as others in this business? I tend to first blame it on the program. Then I blame it on my sponsor. Then I blame it on the sky, wind and the rain. The last person(s) to blame is Me, Myself, and I.

I come to realize that my lack of success is not [completely] the result of others, though not all marketing platforms are create equal, but a lot of it has to do with ME and the things I didn't do.

Thanks for sharing this post as it will help me going forward with my NEW START with Wealthy Affiliate and this great community of leaders and learners.

You make some good points. Even choosing which platform to use and choosing from the various training programs is a choice. Sometimes our choices can seem overwhelming, but at least we have choices.

I wish you well with WA. It's given me and many others a good start and continuation with our affiliate businesses.

Thank you!

Diane good post and yes the blame game is everywhere. I know I can be at fault at times but then I correct myself at the end of the day we make choices for ourselves. Like you said, you have a bag of chips no one else made you eat that whole bag but your self. Blame you point the finger at you. Good job. Alicia

Thank you, Alicia!

Hi, Diane,
Thanks for sharing. We must take responsibility of all our actions; shifting blame would not do.

Yes, that's true. But then we can also take credit for our good choices!

You are right.
Thanks.

It's true, Diane. Sometimes it's easier to point fingers at other people rather than saying "I'm sorry, it's my fault."
Maybe it's about time for some of us to take responsibility for our own choices and actions. We need to stop "The Blame Game! "
Very good post indeed. :)

Thank you, Maria!
