$ Internet Marketing Leaders and How to Get There

The recognised top earners in Internet Marketing (IM) would be people like Frank Kern who holds the record for the most sales in a day. $US23million. Or Eben Pagan who has sold in excess of $US100 million. Even says he has 10 IM businesses and the one of them sells over $US20million per year.

Both these guys sell their own product, directly and through affiliates. What's really interesting to watch is how they do it. I am subscribed to both sellers and I get to see how they market. It's very clean and just about sales with a specific process.

How to Get There (the simplified version)

1/ Learn from the best - follow great internet marketers. Not just the Frank Kern's and the Eben Pagan's. There is a myriad of people below that. Observe their marketing funnels, their landing or opt in pages, how they structure their sales. I even observe the software they use. Watch the URL change as you connect in to their systems. And of course observe Affiliate Marketers. Most selling there own products start out selling as affiliates.

2/ The Types of Sites - For me there are just two categories;

  • Authority sites - provide a lot of information. Great for google ranking.
  • Sales sites - traffic is driven to the site and the focus is an automated sales funnel.

3/ The Types of Marketing - Again for me, keeping it simple, just two options;

  • Organic - Free stuff, optimising the website for search engine ranking, social media connections.
  • Paid - paying for ads in various media to drive traffic to the site.

4/ Where should I start? - There is a lot to learn and it will take time. Commit the hours, study successful marketers, build your sites. Wealthy Affiliate is a great resource as a premium member to take you on this journey.

  • Start with one site
  • Avoid the distractions and focus
  • Start the Wealthy Affiliate training and build your site
  • Get the landing page right
  • Get the call to action right
  • Have a great affiliate product to sell
  • Automate the sales funnel so it's little work. Affiliate products make this much easier.
  • You will be successful

What if I want to do my own product;

  • Don't!, is the general advice. At least not first up.
  • If you do you will need the following
    • CRM
    • Marketing programme
    • Build your products
    • An e-commerce function
    • Storage system for your products
    • The list goes on.
    • Expect your monthly bills to be significant.
    • Hire a coach if you can. You won't know what you won't know.

5/ Is there a start bigger option? - Yes there is. There is much more to learn doing this. It will take more time and cost more money. Therefore the risks if you get it wrong are greater. I've chosen this option for a few reasons. So I thought I'd share those;

  • I came here wanting to market my business. Selling digital products. Selling client sessions.
  • I have the remnants of concussion so I need to fully automate what I do or I'll be creating a monster for me.
  • I'll be able to ramp the business up with limited bottlenecks.
  • Allows for the scaling of the sale of digital products.

So how does my business look;

  • CRM Marketing software. I'm likely using Infusionsoft at $US299 per month. Have a look at it. It fully automates me front to back easily. Why did I choose this? Most good internet marketers are using it. There are other products and I've fished through most of them and discarded them. I need easy to run and this does that. I still have two more products that I haven't discarded yet. This will be sorted by the end of the week.
  • Landing pages, free product with great value, list building, sale of small product, sale of bigger product and marketing of other services. The classic internet marketing model. I will have 20 odd landing pages within the business.
  • Website wordpress. Genesis or Thrive Themes is the likely starter. WA is a good place to host.
  • Seasoned Internet Marketers all say it's just as easy to sell a big ticket item as it is to sell a low ticket item. I am not convinced on that so clearly my beliefs are down at the beginning end of the scale. So that's where I am starting.

My goals;

  • Automate everything. This will take another 2 months at a guess. Fully automating the system allows me to scale it and put no further load on the business or me.
  • to be a significant earner. So I'm aiming for the $1 million plus per annum.

This should be fun. I have cut my work days down and have ramped up my hours per week.

Conclusion

Start with WA, focus and avoid the distractions, find the niche and affiliate product and build the site, learn from the really good internet marketers and get a great landing page, focus on list building, and the sale. Everything else is irrelevant.

If you have any suggestions on other products I should look at let me know. I'm down the tail end of putting this together.

Good luck with the journey.

Great information Des, thank you for sharing:)

Good ideas. I have been doing some research but following some lower down the rung of success.

Some good advice Des, thank you for the post!

This is an excellent post with some excellent advice and some great information! Thank you for sharing!

Those are some pretty specific goals. I haven't gotten that far yet. But then again, I don't plan on earning $1m a year. I'm so happy if I get $2000 a month.

But the principles are the same.

I have trouble SELLING things to people. I don't like the process of selling. I don't like the psychology behind it. I don't like messing with people's heads like that. I'm actually pretty bad at it. I think most people are. So I can see why you'd suggest to hire a coach - if you can afford it.

I actually thought about hiring a blogging coach later on down the line, maybe about a year from now for my one year anniversary. Only a professional can help you take your business to the next level. But WA is a great place to start.

Thanks Kinya,

WA is a brilliant place to not just start but hang out long term. There is so much useful information here. There are many people that have been here for years and I can see why.

When you're selling something it's not a situation where you sell them something they don't need. That's a scam. You're selling a good product with great value and they need to find out if it's what they want. With IM they are finding your page and there is something they are interested in. Your job then is to give them the information that they need to make a buying decision.

We did that with WA. And they used the classic system, free, so you get to check it out and build trust and get a feel for the product, then $19 so it's a small step and you get to try WA Premium for a month then finally $47 if you want to keep it. At this point both you and I decided WA Premium was worth keeping. So we've been through a highly effective sales funnel. How did it feel as a buyer. To me it felt good. I bought exactly what I wanted. That's how good IM is done.

The client wants to know there is something of value and they will feel better about buying if they trust us. The free product, with heaps of really useful information delivers here. Then the small buy, then bigger buy.

This is selling or marketing.

The reality is if people don't trust you, don't believe you have what they want, then they won't buy. And you could have a really great product with great value. So that for me sums up the importance of the landing pages. If they buy and it's a lemon they will seek a refund. If you are using Clickbank products then you won't be seeing much. What I like about Eben Pagan is that he's an ethical seller. I appreciate that.

So selling or marketing is just letting the prospective client know what they are getting, and answering all the questions they have that stop them buying. It's really important to let your clients get access to all the information they want or need to make a decision.

If we have negative beliefs around the word SELLING maybe we need to use Internet Marketing instead.

Enjoy the journey.

FYI I don't have negative beliefs around selling. When i go to an appliance store I want a salesperson who can sell. They will know the products. They will know how to ask the right questions to find out what I really want, and also what I really need. The answer all my questions that stop me from buying so I am ready to buy. A poor sales person will know nothing and give me what I ask for. And if there was a new product that was better that had added benefits and was completely different I'd never hear about it.

Cheers, Des.

You make really good points Des. I suppose I never looked at selling like that. But I'm a different type of person. When I go into a store to buy something I already know what I'm looking for, and I don't want anyone selling me anything. I've already done all my research. I want to get what I came for and leave. As you can probably tell, I don't go shopping much. I'm one of THOSE people.

But I do admit that my negative view of selling comes from dealing with unethical people. You're right; I did go through a sales funnel with WA. And I enjoyed it. And yes, I am going to keep it.

They did sell me this service right. I didn't feel cheated and I never thought for a second about quitting or asking for a refund. It's refreshing to know that this place exists, because I almost gave up on trying to make a living online. I thought to myself that this is my last stop; if this doesn't work I'll have to write for people for the rest of my life. Now I don't see that happening. In fact, in a year, I see me having a successful blog and going to live my life however I see fit.

The gurus I dealt with often used blind sales pages, meaning you'd have to buy the product to see what it was. They'd tell you what it wasn't, but not what it was. It was so frustrating. But then again, it's dishonest and unethical. So I see your point.

Kinya, so it sounds like you're okay with SELLING ethically and providing clients with value. List building is key in this business. Our lists contain our clients.

As a client I know that if I have a history of getting value from someone that then builds trust and I am more willing to make a decision to buy from them.

It's neat to have experienced this WA funnel and remembering it as we go forward.
