Hello, I'm Derek.

Sometimes I make unnecessary lane changes and sometimes I make sandwiches. The lane changes are typically because I'm a rebel who lives life on the edge, the sandwiches are typically ham with mustard.

My rebellious streak bullied me into moving 12 hours away from home. I didn't cross an ocean, but I crossed the state of California and landed in Orange County. This move was brought to me by a job opportunity presented to my girlfriend.

I do everything within my power to support my better half. I wasn't going to let an opportunity slip through her fingers just because she wanted to stay in Oregon with me. So here I am, in Southern California, where the only thing higher than the medical marijuana card holders is the rent.

Rent is atrocious down here! The two of us had concluded that it would be best for me to work from home. This would allow us plenty of time together, despite the fact that she was about to become very busy with work and school.

I had planned on writing for content mills as a source of income. Silly me, optimistic to a fault. For those of you that don't know, content mills are places that you can register to write articles for other people. The "articles" were the same type of posts that I, and all of us at WA, write now. The difference being, when I was writing for the content mills, completing ONE post could make me $10 if I was lucky. Now, the same kind of post pays me over and over again by bringing traffic to my site and converting customers. The content I was writing was making money for OTHER people, but it wasn't making enough money for me.

It's incredibly difficult to earn a full-time income writing for the content mills (I would say it's impossible, were it not for the fact that I've known of people who've done it), but if I had gone out and acquired a "real" job I would have never seen my girlfriend and the whole "California move" would have been for naught. However, the experience is what taught me about affiliate marketing. Ultimately, it brought me here to Wealthy Affiliate.

WA has taught me so much, and I accredit all of my success to it's teachings. When I first signed-up I was desperate for a better way of making money online, because I was living off of my savings and the content mills weren't panning out (I was starting to get scared). I finished Part 1 of the Getting Started Course, and I had to decide if it was worth cutting into my savings to upgrade to Premium. Obviously, you know what I decided. I went Premium, and I never looked back.

I was living on my savings bubble, weary of the impending pop, when my website reached maturity. Then it all clicked into place. I started making money! Am I rich? No. But I can support myself, hang out with my girlfriend, and breath easy knowing I am in complete control of my livelihood. There is no puppet master pulling my strings anymore! This dummy is his own man... you know what I mean.

One day I'm sure I'll be filthy rich (There's that optimism again!). I've already learned how to make money. Now I just need to rinse, scale, and repeat. Having said that, I already feel incredibly wealthy. Being a FREE man can have this side effect, ironically enough.

Well that's my success story! It wasn't all as good as it sounded. I had my share of bumps in the road. Each time I saw one of those bumps approaching, I would make a very necessary lane change.

I'm off to lunch! It's Tofurky with mustard today... California has had an adverse effect on me.
