I'm pretty sure my computer hates me.
Bit of a rant, here. So I've been busting my butt the past few weeks to finish up a website for a client outside of WA. I promised with all of my everything that I'd have it complete by tomorrow. (It's currently 9PM where i live) ... but what happens?
Well, first Windows 10 decides to just flatline on me. I can browse online, but I can't access the start menu. The START menu! Sure, there are back road ways of navigating through my system, but ....
ain't nobody got time for that!!!
(sorry, had to be said!)
Regardless of the Windows frustration from hell, I push forward because I HATE being late for deadlines almost more than ANYthing! ANNNDD it's one of my most terrible weaknesses! I couldn't estimate a completion date to save my life.
I've gotten to the point of taking what I initially 'guess' the timeline will be - then at least tripling if not quadrupling that time - because let's face it - it's SO much better (from a client's perspective) to receive an estimate of 4 weeks time and receive the work in 2 or 3 weeks... than it is to receive a 1 week estimate and not receive the work for three weeks!
Not sure when or how I learned that little trick, but it's pretty cool. 99% of the time, even if you KNOW you can finish a project in a week's time, something is bound to come up - and you'll run into problems, whether it's mobile responsiveness, problems with your design not coming together how you'd hoped, or in my case here, Windows deciding to just flop out on me! .... And besides that, when someone is quoted a time frame - even if it's six months! ... they are elated to receive the work even two days early. :) They don't have to know that in your mind, you thought you coulda finished in 2 weeks originally! ;)
ANYway, where was I? Oh right! The website that's due in a matter of hours! Well, I can't work on it. Why? Because after the Windows BS, my server via Hostgator decides to flatline on me!!!!! REALLY??
And this is the information I receive (after waiting on hold for over an hour)
Hello,
At this time we are aware of MySQL connectivity issues that is affecting multiple servers. We are working diligently to fully restore MySQL on all of these servers. Please we will continue to update this thread as we have further updates.
Great. That's just so wonderfully comforting! So anyway, I'm not sure if a blog post is the right choice of medium for ranting and raving, but I am about to completely lose the plot and needed a place to vent! Also, I'm pretty damn well ready to start the migration of my sites to the servers here... but I'm not real sure how to start that process.... Any guidance on that issue will be greatly appreciated!
I know a lot of people have told me to take the course step by step, but I may just have to step forward a few steps to try and get as far away from my current hosting provider as possible!
Guaranteed 99% up time??? My sites have all been down now for well over an hour. Nice. Except ..... not. Grr, etc.
Anyway, thanks for listening. I am so frustrated I could explode. (I won't get into the client who just asked if she'd be able to edit a brochure I'm designing for her in Photoshop - which she requested - when her skills are limited to the Microsoft Word and "sort of a little bit of Publisher" as well.................... Errrmm, all I could do was ask if she was familiar with InDesign? Photoshop? Illustrator? .....)
I think I've finally lost it! :)

Update - my server is back up (only took an hour and a half! oy) .... Still would love to hear any advice on where to begin the process of moving my domains over here! :)

This is quite the right place for ranting and raving, if we don't understand your frustration, no one does!
Hope all get back to normal soon, and thanks for the Windows 10 update, I still haven't downloaded the free offer.
@Loes - I honestly hate to say it, but I'd wait for awhile... at least until they've provided a patch for this problem... (I did read somewhere that they were supposed to have some sort of "Fall Update Release" which according to rumors is actually just bits and pieces of the original new release that they failed to prepare in time for launch day...) Nevertheless, if you're primarily a PC user, just watch it closely because they're going to start charging full price for the upgrade next summer. I'd get it while you can - especially if your system is running an earlier version of Windows (there's always the option to factory restore)...
Anyway, I've switched laptops to continue work this evening (and unfortunately I've already upgraded to Win 10 on this PC too .... so far so good, but then I sure don't wanna jinx myself! lol) - but the thing that sucks is that I REALLY loved it when I first started using it! It was (before the disaster earlier) one of THE best updates I'd seen from Microsoft! ... I was very disappointed and really kind of surprised when the system just stopped working for me... but even more disappointed when I went searching for a solution...
Just do a google search for "Windows 10 critical error. Your start menu isn't working" .... it is allllllll over the web ... and I for one (in my hour or two of searching) found absolutely nothing positive. Microsoft doesn't seem to be worried about coming up with a patch for the problem.. they just say stuff like "start in safe mode" - uhmmmm... "Starting" is the problem to begin with!
It's just frustrating because it truly is beautifully done - and I upgraded on Launch Day this past summer... and haven't had a single glitch til now! If a new OS is gonna be crap, typically you'll know it within a few days or even a month or so... but several months later? I was just very surprised and sad about it.
One guy said on a forum, "Solution to the problem? Get a Mac" ... LOL. I loved it. I SOOO wish I could afford a Mac!!! Maybe one day that'll happen for me! :)) Anyway, sorry about the novel! I just realized how much of a geek I really am!!!! Jeeeeeeeeeezzzzz !!! lol.
Talk to ya laterz! :)

Thanks, I will wait for a while
