Low hanging fruit - I get it now!

I finally understand what WA meant by low hanging fruit and how to use it. I was listening to a podcast the other day about an individual who makes a five figure income monthly without creating backlinks or using social share buttons. Their technique is to use keyword research to find super low search traffic and even lower competition. This can usually get them on the search engines number one page.

The reason for this is that there is not a lot of content for this keyword phrase and search engines need the content because people are searching for this.

They are using long tail keywords to find traffic as low as 10 searches a month and then using the ("allintitle:"keyword phrase") search in Google to find SERP's (Search Engine Results Page) with only a few pages. This way when they build an article around the keyword phrase they are most likely going to be on the first page. Their SEO technique is also off the beaten path. While they do use the keyword phrase in the title, the articles are written naturally and for the readers, not the search engines.

Another thing I learned is that their niche sites are "Buyer Driven", which means they only produce articles geared toward someone who is looking for a product or service online to buy. So show them what they want and they may purchase it. (content and authority in the niche are still relevant and required) They usually include related products on all pages.

The purpose behind them not using social is the way the design their sites, because they are buyer driven the individuals on those pages are less likely to share the information with friends or the public.

I am hoping that this article helps people just starting out who are also confused about how to use the low hanging fruit technique like I was. This should work for any type of commerce driven site and maybe even work for non commerce site, (but for that I would put the social share buttons on your site).

Thanks for sharing this great information David. I guess that the "low hanging fruit" keyword technique gives many of us here headaches and you are clearing it up for most of us.

Best wishes,

Great Blog....I pushed the follow.

good blog..thanks

This is excellent information David! I am just starting to understand the low hanging fruit concept but I was looking at it totally differently, so thank you for sharing this.

I finally got an answer to a post I created http://playwithtraffic.com/how-long-does-it-take-to-make-money-online/ I got off work today and checked all my accounts and found that I actually made $2.50 on Google Adsense. So yesterdays soda is paid for, cha ching. LOL

Good keywords are very important I think. I agree with you David:)

Thanks Darren, I bought a product many years ago that I have been using to help me in my research and I am in the process of revamping my sites to take full advantage of the lowest hanging fruit.

this post gives me plenty of ideals all the best

I'm going to experiment with this soon, I had wondered about the math, at 10 searches a month, even if they all land on my site and buy...what am I missing, how does it add up to a large income?

Every little bit adds up over time. Like building a good foundation it starts with just one brick and you keep adding more.

These people are clearly making it work, but I'm guessing they have quite a few websites and niches, I got 1200 in traffic fairly quickly to just 10 posts when I just begun the training and had no idea what I was doing - like you said in your other post - conversions are necessary, and they are hitting 10 conversions a month, but as pros...they will really be getting hundreds a day from somewhere!

Hey Moz, they run a total of 40 sites to get it to the level they are at. When they start a new site they set it up to post once a day for thirty days and then once a week after that. Each site is geared toward a different niche area like farming, work from home, tools, etc.
The key was to build pages that target the buyer search query (long tail key phrase) Most of the pages have a product with a large image at the top then an intro explaining the benefits > then five related products and followed by the rest of the article.

That would be 10 for each low hanging fruit post times let's say 100 post, that should add up to 1000 a month that are more or less ready to buy.

Sounds about right, now it is my understanding that analysing your bounce rates and fixing the lowest scoring ones can increase this number over time. An example is a low conversion on a hot selling product on Amazon. You would go back and test another version of the page to see if it improves or drops. Testing and tweaking to get the preferred numbers. But always on the lookout for the next best keyword phrase. She also mentioned that some product just do way better than others and that it all averages out.

@davidgasser: wow- you have a great way of summing up a ton of training in a short blast - thanks!!

Thank you Moz

This is very interesting! I read the Low Hanging Fruit article a few times and I was trying to find the balance between low ranking competition and high traffic but did not think about how low traffic could also benefit a newer website! This could possibly work for my website (which is focused on finding clothes online)! Thanks for the interesting tidbit!
