The Chromium Virus

This post is intended to help you do two things, especially if you use Google Chrome as I do and most of us in this community do

In our Lodge, we use a laptop and I have an office desktop, both of which use Chrome, but have firefox as a back up for many different reasons

However, just recently, the laptop, managed to attract the awful Chromium Browser Virus, which is full of Malware, from our lap top which has Windows 10 installed.

The Chromium Browser in its own right is a legitimate browser and is open source, but for some reason, it managed to install itself onto the laptop. I suspect the fact that it is open source, means some one somewhere, decided to corrupt it

Anyway it showed up and the first sign something was wrong, came when I opened up Chrome as usual, but instead of my usual home pages coming up, I was diverted to the Chromium Browser Tab on another page

The Chromium Tab, looks the same as the Chrome Tab, but it is all blue, unlike the Chrome we know and love : )

It is an irritation and fairly difficult to remove, because its a self replicating virus, so it goes every where and slows your PC performance right down.

Eventually after a few days of trying & Googling how to remove it,I actually thought I had done it once, only to find it happen again on start up with Chrome I finally managed to do this yesterday evening which was a relief : )

So if you have the Chromium virus this is how I got rid of it ( it was the easiest method I found)

Chromium Virus Browser Removal

The first thing you have to do is close all the broswer tabs you have open

Then in the search window by your start windows in the bottom left hand corner

Type in Task Manager

This opens up a new window, which gives a ton of different tabs, from those tabs choose

Start Up

In there you will see Chromium together with its badge. Right Click on this

You are then given an option to go to File Location

Once there, highlight and right click on Chromium and this will delete it to the recycle bin

From here go back to the task manager, go to the Start Up and right click again, choosing the disable option

Once that is done go to the recycle bin on your desktop or wherever you keep it

Empty it!

Doing this should remove all the components from your computer.

This is what I did, the actual time taken to do this was around 5 minutes and I was going slow to make sure I was doing it ok

Once you have it removed, log off and then logon again to your computer.

On start up, you should just get your home page up and a bit quicker than before

This means there are no traces of Chromium on Your PC that you know about

Hope this helps, because there is nothing more frustrating than a slower running PC

It's on my iMac -- any ideas on how to get rid of it...? Thanks!

Sorry Amy, no idea I'm afraid, I got rid of mine, as per my article, but it took a few searches before I found a simple answer

If it helps, I tried this in searches "How do I get rid of the Chromium Virus on Windows 10 for free"

That brought me to one I wrote about

BTW I dislike W10, but sadly it forced itself onto my wifes computer ( How I don't know!)

Thank you so much, Dave, for sharing the information:) Sorry you had such a hard time.
Blessings:)

Thanks for the information. You really can be infected with a virus when you download and install unknown applications. It's better not to explore an unpopular program than to be regretful because it's so burdensome.

Absolutely, but the thing is with this, that It came in with Chrome, How I have no idea, but in it came : )

Thankfully binned it

Thank you for sharing much apreciated
