Mum’s Birthday

Today, 1st May would have been Mum’s 93rdbirthday and tomorrow, May 2nd the second anniversary of her death. But I never look on these occasions with sadness, instead I look fondly on my childhood and also remember that other great woman in my life – grandma.

Whenever anything was wrong, when things were going badly for a seven or eight year old, grandma always fixed it with a few pennies for an ice cream or a stick of liquorice.

And I can still smell the aromas of mum’s cooking, flavoursome dishes that influence my own cooking today, even after all these years (21 and a bit, plus a bit more).

Some great memories, I’m blessed to have known them both.

What’s your favourite memories of those special women as you grew up.

Take care all,

Bux

Hi Dave,

Glad you have great memories of your Mum. Thanks for asking about our favorite memory of our Mum's.

Our family is scattered all over the world. My Mum and Dad had moved to Canada after they retired while living in England. When our Mum reached 80, we all met up in England where we originally lived and had a fantastic week's celebration.

There were two events. The first was a family dinner at a nice restaurant. The second was a big party for family and friends. Our Dad had since passed away and was not there.

There was one picture we took that stands out. Four generations all together. Part of these celebrations was the baptism of her youngest great-granddaughter.

Throughout all these events, the English weather was fantastic. Her 80th BIrthday was May 2006. She passed away in Canada two days before her 85th.

Hard to imagine that in four more years I will be 80. Unlike our parents, my wife and I couldn't have natural-born kids. We adopted one son. And our families are scattered even further away. So I don't expect to be having any 80'th celebration as we arranged for our Mum.

My wife and I may do something else, Like go on an extended cruise. And if we can afford it, take our son and his kids with us.

Cheers.

Edwin

That’s a great insight Edwin. A lovely story. Yes, I agree, get yourselves onto a cruise somewhere and enjoy your time with whoever is there.

My favorite would have to be the last Christmas that I went home to visit my parents. We did not know it at the time, but it was my mothers last Christmas.

Withing 6 months she was gone. I was lucky to have made the decision to visit when I did.

Always visit when you can we never know how much time we have.

Hey, Bux!

I'm very happy for you that you can focus on the good times you had, instead of being sad at this time.

Also, my mom's cooking is fantastic too and so was my grandmother's.

Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away in 2006.

Now, as far as my mom goes, she's my hero and for more reasons than one!

So as not to turn this into my autobiography, I'll just tell y'all one of them.

When I was younger, I guess you could say I got off the beaten path (drinking, drugs, partying, etc..)

However, my mom always loved me unconditionally, anyway!

Now don't get me wrong, she didn't condone any of the things I did wrong.

It's just that she didn't love me any less or never acted like she loved me any less because of them!

Her love didn't come with stipulations.

So that's just one of the reasons she's my hero, but a big one!!!

Anyway, I'm back on the straight and narrow now that I'm a little older, at least for the most part... lol

Have a blessed week, Bux and everyone else too :)

That's really good that you shared that Zach. A mum is a mum, whatever.

I really appreciated and loved your share as well :)

Have a great rest of your day!

Oh yeah, I hope you get to cook some good food pretty soon too :)

I didn't know my Grandmas, they died before I was born. But my Mum made the best Sunday dinners ever. A traditional roast followed by applie pie and cream!

3

Don't Jenni, my mouth is watering already. I have never been able to replicate mum's Sunday roast.
Take care.
