Nobody Cares About YOU!

OK. I know that sounds a bit harsh and I'm sure your friends and family all think you're great.

However, in the world of online business we all need to realise that when you are trying to sell something - whether it's your own product or something you are promoting as an affiliate - then nobody cares about you or what the product did for you. All they want to know is what it can do for them and how it can make their life better.

Now, you might have an established website and maybe even an email list of people who have subscribed to your newsletter etc. And maybe you want to argue and tell me that these people love you. Sorry, but they don't. They are only interested in what you can do for them.

You can take this news one of two ways.

You can be hurt and offended.

Or you can use this knowledge to your advantage and start tailoring your message to allow for the fact that your audience don't care about you - they only care about themselves.

If you are honest with yourself then you will probably be just as guilty of this yourself. I'm sure you have subscribed to many courses or email lists too. Unless you are a saint then you didn't subscribe (or pay) because you thought the creator was a "great guy" - you subscribed because you thought they could help you get towards a goal.

You didn't join WA just because Kyle and Carson are top blokes - you joined to learn how to create your own online business in affiliate marketing.

How To Take Advantage

Here's how to take advantage of this knowledge.

Whenever you have written a piece of content - particularly a piece of content in which you want to make a sale - go through it and look for the following words:

I, me, my, we, ours

If you see these words then this is where you are talking about yourself - and your prospect is losing interest because it's not about them!

Reword this content to use the words

You, your yours

This keeps the prospect interested because you are talking about them and discussing what a product or service might do for them. This keeps them engaged and wanting to know more.

Examples:

I lost 7kg in my first 2 weeks on this diet

becomes

You could lose 7kg in just 2 weeks!

---

I learned some amazing gardening tips from this book

becomes

You will learn how to have a garden fit for the Chelsea flower show when you get your copy of this book

---

It might sound harsh to hear that nobody cares about you but when you realise that it's the truth and start using it to your advantage, you will find your sales messages converting much better.

To close, I'd like to share my favourite meme of the week which nicely illustrates the point:

All the best

Dave

PS - I still care about you!

Hi Dave!
Your title lured me in, I was curious where you were going with that! That makes a lot of sense.

I understand the most when I put myself into the perspective of the reader.

Your example of signing up for a newsletter because we feel like it will help us with something hit the nail on the head! I'm sure the things I have signed up for have been created by great people, but you are right... I signed up because of what they could offer ME.

Thanks for sharing great insights once again!
Heidi

Hi Heidi

Thanks for the kind comment.
Yes it's important to always look at your content from the perspective of a reader and make sure it is talking to them and selling the benefits of what you want to promote or sell.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

A great reminder of what we’re suppose to do when writing content.

I’ve always been wary of those who like to self-promote themselves or say “It’s all about me, me, me!” But what matters more is that we should be helping others while providing value, not promoting ourselves.

You list some basic examples of what we should include. Very good- thanks so much for the valuable article!

All the best,

-Eric

Hi Eric

Self-promotion is definitely a turn-off and totally self defeating. Nobody cares about the results that others have achieved - they only want to know what they can achieve.

Hope your business is going well

Thanks
Dave

Great post, Dave! I have found myself putting I or me int my posts at times. But, have also gone back and changed the wording like you recommended.

But am beginning to think, I may need to go back and double check some of my first articles. I guess I have a little checking to do.

Thanks for the tip.

I wish you the best!

Bob 👍😀

Hi Bob
Sorry to give you all that extra work but once you make sure everything is focused on the customer you should find thatthings convert much better

Thanks
Dave

The work will be well worth it if I can get more traffic and conversions from it.

So, I look forward to the task.

Aw, you're just putting us on, Dave. Just trying to make us think you care about us. Right? Sorry. I just had to mess with you a little bit. I seriously am thankful for all your good words, and those of everybody else. Have a great day.

Hi Earl
You know I care about you and all my WA friends!
But it's definitely something to remember within your business - to focus on what the potential customer wants from you.

Thanks
Dave

Of course, Dave. Just a little tease. You are a good man, and I appreciate you very much.

You're a gentleman Earl! Have a great day

The 'feel, felt, and found' method works well too. But yes, the best way is to make it about them. Love your post, Dave. Thank you much.

Hi Joss
Yes I have heard of feel, felt, found as well but I can't remember exactly how that works.
Glad you enjoyed the post

Thanks
Dave

Oh, well, Dave, I know how you FEEL about the line being difficult to remember. Trust me, my friend, I felt the same way as you do. But you know what I found? I first heard it at a Mary Kay training on sales and recruiting, and because I've been using it all the time, it makes it easier to remember (buy, purchase, get)... Works every time.

Aha - Thanks for the reminder.
Glad to hear it works well for you. Will definitely have to take a closer look myself

Cheers
Dave
