Quantity vs Quality and Which One Matters the Most

Quite a few years back I remember I had about 60 websites all rocking at once, all on auto pilot and the traffic from the search engines was insane. At one point, I remember making about $800 per day on average. It was my first taste of success.

Most of my "money sites" as we called them were review sites and I'll tell you right now, I am so glad they are no longer in existence!
They were horrific at best.

Empires Were Being Built On Piles Of Garbage Foundations

But the thing of it was, back then it was ALL about numbers and mass quantities. Everyone and their dog were creating website after website of absolute garbage and I was right there in the thick of it all. That's what was being taught and everyone did it.

I remember reading other review blogs and people used auto-article writers and spinners and because the technology was new sometimes the articles published gave unintentionally hilarious results. It was clear that either a bot wrote the crappy post or King Arthur traveled forward in time to write some of the funniest reviews and ridiculous blog posts ever created.

What kind of article creator bot would use the term "doth" or "thou shalt"? it was weird and goofy.

The Truth Was...

It was laziness at its height and that was what everyone did.

I used spinner programs but I wrote the originals myself because of that reason. Didn't matter, my stuff was horrible too and obvious I was promoting some of the worst Clickbank products you could find.

And yet, these websites were making money for me like I never imagined. The one huge mistake I also made then was I wasn't building a list.
This was a big newbie error but I really didn't care then because, who needs an email list when at the height of it I could make on average $1000 a day like clockwork.

I thought I had the world by the cajones like I was Tony Montana or something. Then one day a "penguin" came along and burned it all down. Not just mine, but everyone I knew suddenly went from thousands a day to practically zero income.

Google had no choice and as upset and depressed I was, I decided to instead understand why instead of attempting to black-hat my way back to first page. (Of course immediately hustlers were promoting "loophole" technology) that was overpriced, either didn't work or sunk you farther in the long run because Google eventually caught you and your site banished to the sandbox for a long time.

Around this time I was following guys like John Chow and his philosophy has always been, people first....business second.

I really resonated with that and that was how I learned that it is far better to have a blog with 3 or 4 amazing posts and proper long tail and LSI keywords than to have a dozen half assed written articles that people won't read because the writer was lazy and did not care about value.

We learn by mentors or mistakes.

Why does it has to one or the other? Why can't it be both?

Great question and you are right, It can be both, and over time it does become both. It all depends on each person and their personal work ethic I suppose. I guess I should have specified that some people being new to the business tend to look for quick and easy rather than the opposite.

Wow, what a story Darren.

Sounded like you were a drug lord making so much money a day! Lol

Hope you saved most of it for the rainy days that came.

Glad you learned and now giving quality. I also did follow John Chow long ago, but now he promotes MOBE, so not interested anymore.

To a bright future ahead of you.
