Celebrating UN World Seagrass Day 1 March

Hi WA community,

1 March is the United Nations World Seagrass Day.

It was only in May 2022 (not very long ago, that the General Assembly adopted proclaiming 1 March as World Seagrass Day.

But why? Well, Seagrasses have been found to be a conduit for food security, climate change mitigation, enhancing and enriching biodiversity, water purification, controlling diseases and protecting our vast and vulnerable coastlines.

The commitment highlights the growing importance of raising awareness, promoting and facilitating measures for the conservation of Seagrasses to help with their growth, overall health and as an important function of a healthy ecosystem for our planet.

Due to their ability to buffer ocean acidification, Seagrasses positively contribute to enhanced resilience to our most vulnerable ecology and species, such as our beautiful coral reefs.

In a word, a little Seagrass does wonders for our planet's health! And that's a good thing.

It's a day to acknowledge and reflect on how we can positively make an impact on our planet's health.
