About Craigrut
Joined April 2017
My name is Craig and I live in Chicago. I've been in marketing for 10+ years, but mostly in direct to customer marketing on the corporate side of things. I'm interested in setting up my own shop mostly to expand my skill set, but it wouldn't hurt to make a few dollars as well!

I have some limited experience on website building, but none previous to WA when it comes to affiliate marketing. I used to teach English to Chinese students online and spent a good chunk of time developing reams of content and then trying to move it into a website completely free of charge. The problem I ran into was I had no idea how to build a website and nobody to ask for help! Things seem to be going far more smoothly here at WA.

You'll also note my profile picture of my poor scared cat Beastling. She acquired this name because she is a giant wimp and we wanted something that would make her seem scary and vicious! I was trying to teach her to go outside and she was just NOT having it at all. Don't worry, she's safe and sound and living the dream for the most part. I think that was the most traumatizing thing that's ever happened to her since I adopted her.

I had a cat when I was young. He had the very similar character as your Beastling. I think because since he didn’t have to worry about catching rat for food that the life was to easy and comfortable to him. Maybe Beastling is the same, just want to be a indoorsy . : D

Hi, Craig. Nice to meet you and Beastling. I enjoyed reading your bio. Thanks for following me. Followed you back. Your Beastling has just the opposite desires of my feline friend, Bigfoot George. He is a Hemmingway cat (polydactyl) with 6 toes on each front foot. He adopted a friend of mine, who already had 2 cats she had adopted. Lolly tried to keep George inside, but he was so much bigger than her other 2 cats, that they were afraid of him, and hid all the time, so George came to live with Leia (my dog) and me.

I did not let him out at all for the first month I had him for fear he might try to find his way back to Lolly's. But he was MISERABLE being cooped up inside, and began shooting between my feet and out the door when I let Leia in and out. So, finally, I had to start letting him in and out at will.

George is a great hunter and usually brings his treasures onto the front porch to show Mom (me, of course) what a good boy he is. I don't especially appreciate that, though, especially when he tries to bring a live mouse in the house with him when he comes in!

Hahah, I can understand why you wouldn't particularly appreciate something like that. Fortunately both mine are wimps and they don't go outside much...When they do it is on a restricted patio without much true outdoor exposure!

Have you seen the microchip doors available from SureFlap? They are pretty cool for cats that like going in and out!
Reply
CarolMeador Premium
No, I haven't seen that. How does it work? George is quite the hunter. Has caught 6 mice that I know of, and probably 15 chipmunks. My neighbor told me she saw him climbing one of her trees trying to catch an owl! I'd like to see him try to drag that home to show Mama!

I PMd you a link to one of them.

Thanks. I enjoyed seeing it. Couldn't use it here, though, because I have French doors with full length glass in one door and a storm door on the other one.
Reply
craigrut Premium
Ah, that would prove problematic! haha

Well, perhaps there's an alternative option out there somewhere!
Reply
CarolMeador Premium
I think the solution to the problem is that I'm selling my house! (Not because of that, of course!)
Reply
craigrut Premium
Hahaha, I see! Well, I hope the new place if 100% feline friendly :)

Actually, I am looking for a home for George because I can't take him to my apartment in town. He would be miserable because he's a country gentleman. Since I'm selling the house furnished, I'm trying to get the new owners to keep him, as he is a fixture in the house, after all!

Thanks for following and connecting. It is so great to meet you here. I have taught English in China for two years. I am back home now and developing my website here at WA. How was your experience teaching online? I see you taught Chinese students. How was that? I have thought about doing it myself now that I am back home. Any tools that helped?
Reply
craigrut Premium
Teaching Chinese students was interesting. I was doing it completely free of charge over a combination of Weibo and my friend's English Immersion School in Shenzhen.

The students in the English Immersion School were awesome. I had a great time learning with them and teaching them too. I actually met a few friends I still keep in touch with 5 and 6 years later.

As for Weibo, I gave it up due to a combination of complaints and overall thanklessness. People simply never expressed thanks for pretty much anything and they complained like crazy if I did things like write a character slightly wrong.

Admittedly, people do the exact same thing here in America so it isn't a slight against China. Just, when you give things away for free people assume they have no value. So why bother treating them well for having provided it to you?

I would never teach for free again, that's for sure. :).

Well said. Thank you for sharing this. When it costs someone something, they value it more. I am considering online teaching along with other online work, such as what I am doing here at WA. The websites for teaching English to Chines definitely pay anywhere from $14-22 USD/hr.

Maybe an extra pic made its way to your profile? I see 4 pics below the main one and the last one is a pic of you (I think - can't really see you behind the previous one with the cat on your shoulder - I think the one where you were trying to teach it to go outside haha)
Anyway, the last pic is of you with a beer in your hand and a dog alongside you that you're patting. Maybe he's just a friendly visitor :)
1. is the profile pic 2. is Beastling on a pretty cozy bed next to the window 3. Beastling on your shoulder and 4. as described above

Haha, you're 100% right. The little preview circle only shows me with the beer so I totally spaced on the dog. That is a random dog at an outdoor bar from a trip to Greece! You're clearly more familiar with my own profile than I am.

Kudos to you! :)

Thank you for sending a message where you took some time to look around! I find many folks just do the 'welcome' message to get some participation points.

Ah well, my pleasure Craig and thanks for your offer of assistance. LIkewise, if I can help at all, please shout.

Hello Craig, thank you for connecting with me. I have a couple of friends who teach English to Chinese students online. One is a school teacher and the other works for a hospital, they make good side money doing that. It is something I had thought about doing also. I think you will find lots of help here, just ask. Best wishes to you for success here.

Hi Cindy! Thanks. I'm not really very good at explaining English to other people because I never studied the English grammar system haha! I would feel bad claiming to be a teacher when I wouldn't be able to answer more technical questions, but I do appreciate the recommendation.

My first website was actually dedicated to sharing all of the different things my friend and I translated between English and Chinese, but I never got it operating properly so I shut it down years ago. I could probably stand it back up at this point, but I'm not sure how terribly helpful it would be for people haha!

HERE ARE 3 WA'ers Training Posts - they helped me - one is vocabulary you use here - one is a detailed use of your dashboard to find anything you will need - one is a plug-in to add to WordPress - that will help you build your sties. Hope they help - they did me This one I wrote - deals with how to "close" for the result you want. Stay with it - you don't need a wish of good luck - you need a plea to study the material and stay at it no matter what - it will change your life and hopefully the people you touch with your message.

Hello Craig, thanks for the follow and your comments on my site. I had initially thought of teaching Chinese online to English speakers but don't really know how to go about it. I searched around, became interested in the internet business and I found WA :)

Wow, cool! Are you originally from China?

I think at this point teaching languages is a wildly competitive niche. I had a few friends that started PopupChinese.com and they had an impossible time getting their page ranked after years of constant content updates etc. There are just so many options out there!

I'm from Singapore actually. Well, I'm putting the idea on hold and promoting WA instead, even though it is just as competitive. I'm building an authority site, so hopefully I can build up my own brand.

Cool. Best of luck with it! I'm sure you'll do great. It looks to me like the most difficult part there is figuring out what key words are left to target in the space and then getting link building done. Honestly, no different than what I'm doing in mine :).

哦。你来自新加坡啊!我还没有机会去新加坡,但是我听说过那里很漂亮。我也听说过特别贵.

Yup, still figuring things out. The first few months are the most difficult.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Thanks Ian. I am mulling over a couple of different ideas at the moment, none of which I'm decided on. Two I feel are larger topics and one I can't seem to figure out how I would target anyone. After a day or two I'll give you a shout if I can't make any decisions.

Hey Craig! I wanted to start you off with a quick note that could SIGNIFICANTLY impact your success with Wealthy Affiliate. Read this entire message if you are serious about being successful in internet marketing (it's lengthy, but I'm not joking when I say that this advice could make or break your entire internet marketing career):

1) You'll need to work consistently and hard. There's going to be a lot to learn in the beginning and you may feel overwhelmed at a point, but keep pressing forward and you'll make it through. It happened to me and every other successful internet marketer at some point, and the only way to become successful in this industry is to push past that overload whenever you get there.

Do yourself a favor and commit to a number of hours that you can work each week right now. It doesn't have to be massive, but it should be more than 10 between evenings and weekends at least. Just remember the more you work each week, the faster you'll learn and draw closer to success.

After you've picked the number of hours you can work each week, commit to working that much for AT LEAST six months - a year would be better. You won't see results immediately in this industry, and being consistent is the key. Pick a number of hours you can work each week, then work those hours for at least six months. It's something you've probably never done in this industry, and this advice alone will make a HUGE difference in your chances at succeeding with internet marketing as long as you take it seriously and STICK WITH IT.

2) I recommend starting off with this training (which you can access with your free account): It just scratches the surface of the MASSIVE amount of helpful content in WA, but you'll get a good "feel" for the teaching style here and begin to see the power of all of the great things they're teaching here at Wealthy Affiliate.

3) DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE COMMUNITY. Two of the best places you can go to for help when you get stuck are the "Live Chat" and the "Classrooms" sections located on the panel to your left. You'll find direction and inspiration through the community here, which is one of the reasons I recommend WA so highly.

4) Finally, you don't ever have to upgrade to the premium account here at Wealthy Affiliate if you don't want to. You'll have limited access using your free account for as long as you wish. HOWEVER, if you're serious about internet and affiliate marketing then you should invest in the premium membership for AT LEAST one month. You could look back on it years from now and see it as a pivotal moment in your internet marketing career, but you never will if you don't at least give it a try.

Check it out for a few days though - you don't need to upgrade right now. Make sure it's a good fit for you, and if you upgrade within the first 7 days you'll receive your first month's membership at more than 50% off. I keep my membership active and recurring every month so I can be here for the people I refer like you, so realize that I'm putting my money where my mouth is here!

On top of that, if you upgrade to a premium membership at the discounted rate within the first 7 days I have a special bonus EXCLUSIVE to people that join WA through me and upgrade within the first week of creating their free account. This bonus will show you how to be twice as successful with WA or any other legitimate internet marketing program out there and gives you some very valuable video lessons (which I recorded for you personally, of course) to ensure you get off to the right step in your internet marketing business.

I keep a close watch on the list of people that upgrade from starter to premium, so I'll send the bonus your way within 24 hours. If you upgrade and don't receive it within that time frame for some reason, just post on my WA profile and let me know!

I don't offer that bonus so you'll spring for the membership and make me more money, I offer the bonus just in case you needed that tiny "push" to make sure you invest in this training because I know that you will use for the rest of your IM career and it could change your life. I've referred hundreds of people now and I have NEVER had anyone tell me they were dissatisfied.

Best of luck to you! You're about to embark on a journey that could change your life forever, so make sure you take it seriously, put in the time and effort, and expect great things in return!

You know where to find me,
Ian Pribyl

P.S. I know I've thrown A LOT of information your way in this message, but I wanted to give you one last thing. Here is a video tour of the members' area to help ensure you get the most out of your free membership as possible: http://youtu.be/NDmMcMtMB8c

Sorry for sending so much your way at once, I just want to set you up for success as much as I possibly can!
