The need for revenue!. My need to focus on the Fundamentals

What's your key objective for getting involved in Wealthy Affiliate? I guess there is a clue in the name of the community and the fact that it is an 'online business community'. A higher percentage of us (in fact most of us here) want to make more money, fact! And we can see that an online business of some description can put us on the path and take us to financial freedom. The difficult part is staying focused and not losing hope while we learn the process, while we get to grips with the tools we need to create our success. I'm as guilty from not staying focused and straying from the path. Getting demoralised and letting self doubt and negativity creep in. Why does this happen? I think there are several issues going on in my head (maybe yours too) when we stray of the path. For me these are:

  • No revenue coming in
  • Results are not happening fast enough
    • Not getting a sale
    • Not getting a new affiliate signed up
    • No website traffic
    • frustration with building website
  • My day job gets in the way
  • Peer pressure and negativity
  • Empty bucket distractions (TV, Going out for drink, etc.)
    • I've started to call things like watching TV my 'empty bucket list' because they drain my bucket of very valuable day time...not good as I need all the time I can get!

The above is not an exhaustive list of all the issues that get in the way of me staying focused. But it gives you an idea of what is going on in my head.

You'll notice the top of my list was 'no revenue coming in'. This is probably the biggest issue for most of us fledgling internet entrepreneurs. We get demoralised quickly because the money isn't coming in. But should we be thinking of the money?.....

Of course we should! A defining part of the word business is making a profit. Making money. We have this as our long term end goal. The word 'end' in the phrase 'end goal' is for me the key. But for our initial short term goals we should try and put money, revenue, making profit to one side and concentrate on the fundamentals. Concentrate on our short tem goals which in part are pieces of the jigsaw that becomes our long term goal...making money!

So what are the fundamental short term goals for me? If I'm following the WA path to online success and my fundamental goals are:

  • Understanding how the community works
  • Following the certification process so I can use the tools I will need
  • Understanding and participating in the WA affiliate programme
  • Finding my niche, building my website (this takes time, I'm still learnging a lot)
  • writing quality content for my blog
  • Understanding how to get traffic to my website
  • Getting to grips with affiliate marketing (which is what I would like to be involved with)

Achieving each one of these fundamental short term goals should be celebrated and in turn will encourage and infuse us to continue and stay motivated to reach our long term of having a profitable onine business.

That's true - thanks for sharing your personal journey :)

Hi Mel, Thank you for reading my blog. I agree that putting others first should be at the fore front of our business and thoughts.

Thanks

Great post. I would say you've identified many of the stumbling blocks folks have, but I differ from you on one point - focusing on the money. In my opinion, as long as you focus on the money, you will continue to fail. I have seen that with many members here - the members that put helping others first in their priority list wind up with much greater monetary success than those who put their money goals first. Just my .02, YMMV.
