Just a couple things I learned this week

This has been a insanely busy week both on and off my website, It is also my daighters birthday weekend so I wont be getting much if anymore work done this weekend.

I did run across some issues though this week that I thought I would take some time to illustrate and hopfully save you some frustration.

You might remember last week I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with my theme, I spent probably 2 days just editing things and playing around just to get a feel for what each little tweak changed and how it looked...I was very pleased with it.

Than one night I realized that I had been working on my computer and on a whim pulled it up on my smart phone so I could see how it looked ....I hated it.

My categories and side bar would not show and nothing I could do changed it so I spent hours and hours this week finding a new theme that worked well with mobile and setting it up just to find out it was showing my categories on the left and the right...again nothing I would do would get rid of the left area.

I contacted the theme creator and they told me that option was not availble but if I upgraded my account and paid 8.99 a month they could "customize "it so it can be removed

I obviously refused on priniciple and back to theme drawing board I went .......5 hours later I had a theme that worked well on my desktop and my phone that I was satisfied with.

There is still one tiny detail I dont love but I worked around and we will be going forward with it the way it is.

Moral of the story- check your theme and website setup on multiple devices.

In the mix of all this I took some my

site credits and used them for feedback, i dont typically do that because so many things are subjective I feel like what one person hates another will like

but

Site feedback caught

1.My ssl was broke and not working I had information icon instead of secure icon

2.The numbers for the list on 2 of my posts was missing 1....it was showing as little weird symbol than the next point went to 2. - I managed to fix this quickly and easily

3. One of the pictures I included had relevant text that was hard to read- This was also a easy fix

Moral of the story - use sitefeedback it is insanely useful.

The broken SSL I spent hours trying to fix searching help here, trying out websites, plugins quick fixes etc etc etc Than I got smart and contacted

site support who fixed it with ease.

Moral of the story- site support exists for a reason- use it.

So much time wasted this week on things I should have had figure out last week... but at least I know now and now you do too.

oh and I know this wont apply to everyone but I just found that you can buy credits for feedback and site comments so even though I plan on spending a hour or 2 here in the evnings commenting and earning I also plan on jump starting things by buying 200 credits ( 100 requests for feedback or comments).

Hi, Christina.
Paul here from Canada.

Thank you for commenting on one of posts.

Listen.

Hang in there. You are good at this and you are only going to get better.

I thought that I would read your posts before heading over to your profile page.

Regards,

Paul.

So lucky to have a great support team!

Yes, it's definitely important to see what your site looks like on mobile. Before joining WA, I had experimented with Weebly and found that none of my ads were visible on mobile. I think maybe one time I found one at the bottom of a page, but most of the time they didn't appear at all on the same pages where they appeared on the p.c. version. So that was one of the first things I checked when I started using Adsense on my current sites. So far, so good.

I haven't had to use sitesupport yet, but you never know. I agree about the feedback thing being rather subjective, as well. I've used it a time or two and just don't see much sense in using it all the time. It's useful once or twice, but once you see the same feedback repeated, there's little point in it. Your credits will be better spent on comments.

Anyhow, best of luck with your site! Sounds like you're well into the swing of it. Awesome!

Mark

It seriously never dawned on me to check , which sounds insane but yeah..... so so so much wasted time

Site Support is so helpful. I’ve handled website issues on my own for years. It’s frustrating and time consuming. It’s so nice we have support here at WA. It’s one of the reasons I’m joined. Thank you for your post. Glad you got your mobile issues worked out.

It is such a huge bonus .... I was so so frustrated and spent so much time . Than it dawned on me they might be able to help andvit was fixed so quick.
