How Your Business Takes Flight

In view of many negative comments on my previous post I've done this illustration in the hope that it gets understood better.

My experience of hundreds of startup businesses is that many of them quit their journey somewhere before step 3 because "it isn't working".

All that "push back" and taxiing around, and paused, and just not getting anywhere. Then a few moments of acceleration in step 2 but "It's still not flying", and it's only covered a few hundred yards on a journey of several thousand miles.

The only businesses that reach step 5 are those that wait for step 3.

Step 3 is where "it STARTS to happen".

Step 5 is "The Actual Start Of The Journey". All the rest is pre-amble.

By way of comparison - Amazon took 7 years to become profitable. Look at it now. Stick with your plan and don't get sidetracked.

Realise that the plane spends A LOT of time on the ground, and A LOT of time in flight, but only a tiny amount of time in-between. That change, from going nowhere to going somewhere, happens in just the blink of an eye.

Here's an actual WA member history showing exactly that ...

I like this analogy! I think most people do give up too soon!! Thanks for posting!!

I was thinking of the law of Lift when I saw ," This is how your plane takes flight"
I know I am off beat here, but , since I fly planes.

You know

Thanks Chris. I loved your previous blog - maybe it's just how one interprets the message. This is crystal clear - it takes a bit of persistence to achieve results. Just because thing aren't working now doesn't mean they won't in a while. It really helps to be reminded of that sometimes :) Especially when you are still to see your site ranked, never mind earn any money!

Thank you Chris
I think I am still at stage 1 right now, but I will stay on this flight till stage 5.
Cheers

An inspirational blog. Thank you for sharing.

Very cool!

Great Analogy!!! I see so many join WA and give up right before their flight is about to take off. I'm going to hang in and cruise at 40,000 feet in the air!

Hi Chris another gem, Thank you for this motivating post. Like the sentiment about step five. Could be where the fun starts.

Great way to show how your business will proceed to profits. Many think that they will make money in step one.

Hi Chris,
I am a pilot and I see the correlation with flying. Yes it is true I sometimes think if I haven't made at least $300 by the end of the first week I am doing something wrong.. In reality I just got the "push back" and haven't even started engines yet and am wondering why I am not in the air?? Patience is the key virtue (which too often I don't have). Thanks for sharing.

Nice to have a pilot's eye view on this. I was also going to add that even stage 4 is meandering about getting clear of SIDs STARs and NPRs and not actually heading for the destination.
