Companies No Longer Including Phone Chargers

Ever since Apple removed the Chargers from the iPhone 12 series, other companies have followed at a rapid pace. Most of these companies say that they are doing it for the good of the environment, but I’d argue that its actually worse for the environment.

Why I think its Worse for the Environment

Newer devices are using USB-C, and not everyone has a USB-C charger, so since its not included you’ll have to buy one.

If you buy one online for example, the charger will come in its own box, then they’ll have to use another box to ship your order in, and then they will have to make another trip to deliver it.

Thats one less trip the delivery company could have made if the charger was included with the phone you have bought.

The charger you purchased will come in its own box with additional paperwork like warranty info, which is additional waste. If the charger was included, there would have been less waste as the Phone, Charger, and Other Accessories come in one box.

Also the Chargers from each brand is usually the best one to use for their own products.

Following Apple's Lead

Another thing I don’t like is how other companies followed Apple’s lead after criticizing it. Apple removed the charger back in 2020 with the iPhone 12 series, and companies like Samsung and Xiaomi made fun of them for this.

Today companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Google have followed. The likely reason why companies did this is to increase revenue from sales of their own branded chargers.

But I think a better way they could have done is to offer us a choice, maybe give a discount if you don't want the charger included. In the end I think the charger should be included by default, especially with how expensive some phones are getting.

Conclusion

It's unlikely that companies will rethink this move, and for some people its not really a big deal. But for the majority of people, the charger is an essential accessory that should still be included.

You're so right about this, Champ! Not only is there waste, but it is an unnecessary inconvenience to the consumer, not to mention an added expense at a time inthe world where Greed rules and the buying power of consumers is depressed!

I counter by recycling the additional paper and by repurposing the boxes for shipping my own products back out!

Jeff

Thank you, Jeff. :)

Thats awesome! Recycling, no matter how small can go a long way in helping our planet.

You're welcome, Champ, and thank you, my friend!

Jeff

Not aware of this.
Thank you for the update.

Your welcome, and Thanks. :)

I agree, Champ. Whatever these companies do, be assured it is to put money in their own pockets. Nothing to do with environment nor customer convenience.

Your right, We should have been given a choice. Companies just can’t decide whats best for all of us.

Well said and true, Archie!

They say it’s good for the environment. But they didn’t say which environment. It’s the profit environment…
Stephen

Your right, there are better ways that they could’ve done this.

Thanks for keeping me aware. My WA pipeline is an important part of my information gathering.
Sami

No Problem, Thanks as well. :)
