Should I be locked up?

Sometimes I can't believe myself! Gradually working my way through the courses, until I reached 'your own domain', you know where I mean? Well, thinking "I'll come back to to this bit." Like an idiot, I skipped it.

Eventually, having the cash to go ahead and buy my own piece of internet 'real estate', I did! Now proud owner of dark-novels.com!

I went back to the lessons I had jumped over. Only to discover, that it is not a good idea to have a site with - hyphens, dashes, whatever you like to call them.

Feeling a right clown (in the best Stephen King way). Especially as I was so pleased to get (almost) the name I wanted. darknovels.com was taken.

Has anyone done anything as daft?

Good luck with yours, and don't skip lessons!

Colin, I use dashes in my first domain. I looked at a lot of comments here before doing this and there was as many 'don't worry about dashes' as there were 'don't use'.

Most people type in keywords and if they hit the combination you have they click on that.

I just looked up the site noted by internetgranny and that's for sale. Did she forget the dashes!

Also, I was going to comment on your website but couldn't find where to do this. How about Stephen King's Misery. Not only a great book but a pretty good representation in a movie (how unusual).

Yes, Misery was both a great book and film. Normally the books are better than films, (in my mind anyway), except Godfather part I.
InernetGranny was talking about Dark Novels without the dash! With the dash, cost $13.99!
Must get on with the comment bit on my site with the hyphen.
Best
Colin

I certainly am with you on the book better than film bit.

Don't worry about the hyphen. Most people will just click on the link, so it doesn't matter about the hyphen. (I've just looked at your website and it looks great!!!) Darknovels.com without the hyphen is actually for sale for a ridiculous amount of money, so it is no competition for you.

As I say, your site looks great, but skipping sections of the training still not a good idea... :-)

I like your theme too - what theme are you using?

I'll try not to skip anymore!
Thank you for your praise for the site, still a long way to go. And making the first sale!
The theme is ...? Twenty-something I think.
Cheers

Hi I have one with a hyphen, as the words unhyphened were already taken, as you found. I´m hoping to develop the content to overcome any issues, Best Alan

Thanks, Alan, I feel a lot happier now!
Cheers
Colin

I've owned domains with hyphens in them. You only have one - it's not so bad. The key now is to build it out with the right content, then Google won't care if you have a hyphen. BTW, is darknovels.com built out? Same topic? If so, figure out what you'll need to do to beat them.

I've got some content - but a lot to learn, and a lot to do!. The site is far from ready. Thanks for your comments.
Colin

I've just looked at darknovels.com (without the hyphen) and it is not built at all. It is for sale for some ridiculous price (nearly $3000). So there is no competition from that site at the moment.

$3,000!!! Mine was $13.99 - and I got a hyphen too!
Colin

Perhaps you can find some tidbits in here
