Which Domain to choose? Dot-com, Dot-net,Dot-org
This question comes up often, especially with Newbies. Which domain should I use, I do know opinions will be different, depending on the person. I am not an authority, but I have done a little research.
I think everyone wants the best domain. They want to rank as best as possible, especially within Google. I think some information I found may be helpful. I know Google is into everything. I was surprised to find that Google now offers their own Google domain.
Google offers Google domains which are in Beta format. Here are a few their features.
I am NOT promoting or advertising for Google Domains. I am simply stating the information.
1. Pick a name. A domain name, your address on the Internet, says a lot about who you are and what you do. New domain endings like .guru and .photography can help you find a meaningful address that stands out on the web. Every domain includes website forwarding, email forwarding (help@your_company), simple management tools and other helpful features.
2. Private registration at no additional cost.
3 .Easy integration with top website builders.
4. New domain endings. Over the next few years, hundreds of new domain endings like .guru and .photography will become available.
5. Customizable sub-domains.
6. Fast, secure and reliable Internet infrastructure with Google.
7. Simple domain management tools.
8. Email forwarding.
9. Website forwarding.
10. Support. With Google Domains, you get chat, phone and email support (M-F, 6am to 9pm PST).
The big question has always been, which one is the best to use? .COM .NET or .ORG Perhaps the most common top-level domains are .Com, .Net, and .Org. Originally, each had a unique purpose:
.com: Commercial (for-profit) websites.
.net: Network-related domains.
.org: Non-profit organizations.
These top-level domains all offer open registration – anyone can register a .com, .net, or .org domain for a website (for a fee). There are a variety of other domains that were added later to take some off the stress off of the original generic top-level domains (gTLDs), including .biz and .info.
Currently, .com is by far the most popular top-level domain – nearly 50 percent of the websites Google visits use the .com top-level domain. We use the OPEN TOP LEVEL DOMAINS most of the time at Wealthy Affiliate.
Open vs. Closed TLDs. Closed top level domains are reserved for those who are qualified.
For example, if you want to register a .museum, .aero, or .travel domain, you must verify that you’re a legitimate museum, air-travel, or tourism-related entity.
Country-Specific Top-Level Domains. There are hundreds of country-specific top-level domains. For example, the .uk domain is for the United Kingdom, the .ca domain is for Canada, and the .fr domain is for France.
Some of these country-specific domains are closed and only allow citizens and businesses in the country to register, while some allow open registration for everyone to register.
The USA has some country-specific domains that aren’t country codes: Private Use..
- .edu: Educational institutions in the US
- .gov: US government entities
- .mil: US military use
- .int International. Used exclusively for intergovernmental entities that have been established by treaties between two or more national governments. The World Health Organization is an example.
Future Top-Level Domains
In 2012, ICANN allowed corporations to apply for new generic top-level domains. The list of applications is long – For example, Google applied for domains such as .google, .lol, .youtube, and .docs. Many companies applied for domains matching their company name, such as .mcdonalds and .apple. A variety of companies also made a land grab for generic domain names such as .pizza, .security, .download, and .beer.
None of these new domains have come online yet, but it seems like we’ll be seeing a lot more top-level domains soon.
I have given you more information than you want or need. I wanted to try and let you see what a TOP LEVEL DOMAIN is and where we are heading.
I am wondering how all of this will affect or change Domain Name Servers (DNS).
I guess another Question has to be, where is this going to lead in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). You start to ask yourself a question. If Google is now selling their own Top Level Domains, would that be an advantage within SEO.

I agree about the .com thing but ... do you really want to use .org or .net if you are a commercial for-profit business? Google can easily tell if you are using .org and your business is actually a for-profit organization.
Thank you for this info. Are we still saying then that at the moment .com is still the top with .org and .net a close second and third?
I have always considered the dotcoms to be the best, with dotorg and dotnet 2nd and 3rd best. But times they are a-changing. I appreciate this post and info and want to follow along on the comment thread to get as much info from the community as possible, too.

I got selected for a Nielson survey on this topic yesterday. It will be interesting to see what the results are.
