I am linking out to a hardware store site (of which I am an affiliate) for my DIY site. I do this so that readers can see good photos of the various types of tools I refer to i

No, you'll be just fine providing you're genuinely doing it in a way to provide value to your visitors. Search engines are very clever these days & can understand what's what.

The only time you'd find yourself having real issues is if you where indeed up to something dodgy... But as you say, you're not - you're just trying to help your users which is exactly what the engines want.
