When should I start promoting my business via social media?

I just had the coolest night last night at a meeting called "The Rising Tide Society". I'm sure many of you have heard of it as it is all over, but they have a chapter up here that meets once a month full of other amazing small business owners/entrepreneurs. Last night was about Growth, Scaling and Collaboration. It was so exciting and made my business adventure way more real being able to talk with like minded people face to face, plus getting to know them, what they do and how we can all work together to build each other and our businesses up.

My husband and I deleted our personal facebook awhile ago and have enjoyed being social media free, however the time came for me to create a more "business" related profile so I can begin to connect more with these people. However, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to wait to build a facebook and instagram page for my business until my website is up and running? Maybe if I do, I'll be able to to focus more on my blogs, and content for my social media when the time is right. Just wanting some input on this idea. If I should wait or if it doesn't matter?

Thank you.

Hi, Carleigh. I agree with Jessica. I think if it was me, I'd spend most of my time on my website first (which I am doing), but since you already have a local business, you might want to connect with them as well. Agree with Jessica, that you could have the FB page that you've already created, but not promote it until you are ready to send people to your site before asking people to follow you. Good luck. Let us know what you decide to do...inquiring minds want to know! Carol

Thanks for the input. I have decided to just keep a personal profile on fb for the time that is only for connecting with fellow local businesses and I won't create an actual page on FB to promote my business until I have my website finished. I would like to finish my website, since it is strictly for a wedding planner/coordinator. There isn't really anything that will change for my website content, until of course i start my blog. Then I figured once the main content is done, I'll be able to focus on blogging, fb, instagram, twitter and pinterest to promote my page and have the time to constantly keep those updated to bring in the traffic.

Hope that all makes sense.

Sounds like a plan, Carleigh. Carol

As you develop your marketing message you cant go social soon enough

I'm seeing a trend here :) website first, then social media. I think that's best for sure.

I agree with Swangirl regarding the content. If you are talking about online business, it is better to have your site populated with a good number of pieces either pages or posts before you can promote otherwise would seem as if you are spamming because you haven't worked enough on your site.
Now, the idea of social media associated with your website should be getting visitors. In such respect, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest should work better than Facebook which is great but can distract the attention from where you wanted it goes: your site.ut can distract the attention from you really wanted it: your site.

That is a good point too.

Thank you for the input as well. I know facebook pages do really really well for people around here. I was thinking to just hold off on that and instagram until I have time to focus on keeping my social media content updated continuously. Still debating on a Twitter (I've never really used it and not sure how it would be as a wedding planner), but planning to link my future insta, fb and pinterest to my website for sure.

Strangely, Twitter is the only one I use now...we can talk about it.

For a purely online business I would wait because content is everything and time should be spent building up content first.

Since you have a local business it might be a different story. You want to build local connections as soon as possible and that is probably easier with a Facebook business page. I don't have a local business or do much for business on FB yet so I am curious what others with more experience have to say!

It is funny you are thinking about this Sis since I was just thinking yesterday that I need to do something on Facebook for my sites also. I learned the hard way there is no point to spending a lot of time on social media too early with an online site though.

I guess the difference is with an online only site you need to make sure organic searchers can find you. With a local business you need to make sure locals can find you too.

That's what I was thinking too. I created an fb profile to be able to connect with the other local business and figured I could post about my up and coming content, but wait until I finish my website to create an actual page. I appreciate the input.

Or you could go ahead and create the page, just don't promote it. Don't ask people to follow it until you are ready.
