All My Working Life

All my life I worked within 100 miles of my home, except when I was in the Army but I always had the urge to see what is on the other side of the hill. So in 2004-5 I put my last child in college and told my kids I am leaving. So I went online and found a few websites that had jobs overseas. Being a Heavy Equipment Mechanic/supervisor most of my working life. I really had no trouble getting a job. I actually had many choices to choose from. The one I was looking real hard at was working oversea at a base over in Irag. If I remember it was called Camp Anaconda and the pay was a good $150plus per deployment, which was one year with a vacation every 6 months.

When my family found out they all were so upset with me for wanting to go to a so-called war zone. they threw such a fit. Humm kind of got me, there was nothing really said when I went to Vietnam. Go figure. Anyway, To keep the peace in the family I found a job working living, and traveling in Antarctica, and get paid to do it. So I applied for the job and got accepted within 4 days. I was on a year contract working at the South Pole station for 12-14 months which is summer and winter and never looked back. I did two summers and 4 winters there with a break in between to do the same thing in the Marshell islands for two years. It was and still is one of the most fantastic experiences I ever had.

Any questions or comments please ask.

Thanks

Captn Jack.

Thanks for sharing. Those kind of experiences are life shaping. I ended up living in isolated Native American villages in northern Canada for many years. Those experiences completely made me who I am. Life changing and amazing times.

Pretty impressive, Captn Jack!

Antarctica. Wow. Very few can say they’ve stepped foot there.
