I Learned A Lot In The Hot Seat
What? You learned a lot in the hot seat? Yep, you heard me, the hot seat. I watched Jay's training last Friday night, May 3rd. And, I must say I learned more in that almost 90 minutes than I've learned since joining last June, well almost more.
Even though my site was not chosen to be reviewed ( the process to choose sites to review was random and very fair ) I learned valuable information from each and every site he critiqued.
As the training started I decided to start taking notes on my cell phone. ( Note 8 with stylus pen ) Here are my notes:
I know these notes don't seem like a lot of information, however, for me they are valuable. I already had a Gravatar so I could check that off the list. I was pretty sure I
had some categories, well, actually just one so far ( Blog ), but, when I went back to site I found some post that were listed in the "Uncategorized" category. I updated those right away.
The one thing he found on every site he reviewed was the lack of a "Contact" page. Saturday morning I added a Contact page using the "Ninja Forms" plugin. My experience with forms told me I needed a reCaptcha to keep form email spam out of my site. The only plugin I found that would work for this was the "Google reCaptcha". After adding it I could never get it to force the reCaptcha to work. One could fill out the form and click "Submit" and the reCaptcha would not for itself to be activated.
After doing some research about the Ninja form plugin I found that it comes packaged with spam protection. I'm not sure if that will work, only time will tell. I then deleted the Google reCaptcha.
Jay was using a cool tool at ahrefs.com to check links and sites for traffic, SEO, etc. That is a paid service with a 7-day free trial. I'd like to be able to use that, but, maybe one day when I am making money from my site.
One of the main points Jay made when looking at sites was the importance of adding external and internal links to your posts. External links go to URL's outside of your website or post and should be an authority source. The example he used was Wikipedia. Internal links are URL'
that link to another page or post inside of your website.
I took note of "Table of Contents Plus" plugin. That is one I have not gotten around to checking on yet.
If you get a chance, check Jay's training out here:

There is no better way to learn than from an expert and when the expert is critiquing and reviewing our work, its' something we should pay attention too.
I hope everyone has a productive week!

Thanks Cal. Will check the training out. Appreciate you pointing it out.
There is so much happening here at WA, it is very easy to miss out on some great information that can make a difference in one's business.
Thanks again and all the best.
You're welcome...so much stuff that I have to keep going back again and again to training. I always miss something.

Hi Cal,
I 100% agree with you about the live session with Jay on friday.
My site did get reviewed which was awesome. But I walked away with so much information it was great.
I also did have a gravatar already, but was missing almost everything else on your list.
I needed to add external links, and a contact page as well. I did not add the recaptcha part. I thought he said that we didn't need to have that, but now I am reading what you wrote and it sounds like we have that built in? Am I right?.
Thanks for this post it is great that we can walk away with so much from a session like this.
Coralie
Hi Coralie, and I really liked your site. Yes, Jay probably knew what I find out about the Ninja form ( which is free by the way ) comes packaged with spam protection, or so they say. We shall see on that.
Thanks for commenting!
Cal
Thanks Cal I appreciate the nice comments about my site.
HAHA yes I guess we will have to wait and see on the spam issue but the Ninja forms was pretty easy.
Thanks
Coralie
You're welcome...basically, just plug and play.
