Hey - I was curious if anyone knew how to make a banner slideshow on my home page with interactive links. Kind of like on the front pages of these websites:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/

http://www.gamespot.com/

http://www.ugo.com/

Here is my website and my theme is Empo:

Thanks for any help you can give me (:

Hi do you know how to input code trying to put in a banner when u click on it directs to a website..

I've developed a number of WordPress sites and the answer is often Easingslider Lite, which is a plugin, downloadable from the WP dashboard. It works on my main site (http://crimsonleaf.co.uk) and doesn't slow the site down. It works anywhere where you insert a small shortcode. Download it and give me a shout by PM if you have trouble setting it up.

by the way, mine fades but it can slide!

I'd follow Nate's (@nathaniell) advice and look for a respected developer that offers this as an integral part of the theme. I'd recommend Woo as a starting point http://d.pr/c5lu You should avoid plugins wherever possible, especially to do something like this when it's going to place an initial load factor on your site, Google uses speed as one of its ranking metrics. Also, WordPress is "opensource" anyone is free to create for it, so not all plugins are safe, in fact some are deliberately designed to do nefarious things to your site and the damage can prove impossible to undo. It's also possible for even legitimate plugins to have unintended consequences, ie. sliders, tables and column plugins are often likely to break a theme's inbuilt "responsiveness" in regard to mobile viewing. You should only use plugins that other Members have already tested, used and recommend. WOW Slider for example, doesn't make it obvious that it uses the "freemium" model, you'll have to pay to remove their watermarking from the slider. Rich.

Have a look at the WOW slider. This looks like a good one. I haven't used it but have heard good things about it. http://wordpress.org/plugins/wowslider/

Oh, I didn't know you could do it with plugins. Cool tip.

Yeah, plugins are a wonderful thing.

This will depend on the theme. I know that lots of paid themes have this, but there are surely some free themes that do it too. I think Page Lines has an option, but it takes some experimenting with customization. I would do a search in Google for "Free themes with sliders" (they are called sliders I think). Or "Free themes with sliders on home page".
