Prepping for Possible Plummet-"Be Prepared!"
Hello, Everyone! Hope you are all getting ready, for whatever is in store, for your weekend!
What Goes Up must Come Down
Here in Texas, we've been having elevator temperatures! Mornings start with the 40s and before long, to the 70s. Some may think it's delightful, but one must be prepared for any weather that may pop up!
"Don't like the weather? ... Wait 5 minutes" .
Very true for SouthEast Texas, who's weather is often changeable, due to the Gulf of Mexico.
Learn from the Past
Last February, we had an unexpected freeze. Usually, we would have a dip into the 30's, and soon, it was back up, and frost would disappear. We were totally unprepared for the hard freeze for 4 days.
Many people had water pipes burst, and after that, flooding into homes.
Water and electric outages were all over the Houston area, including Stafford, Texas, my home.
I had made some preparation, but not enough, so this year, I'm learning from those mistakes.
Consider the 3 P's - Pets, Plants and Pipes
PetsGinGin's happily lets me don her outside togs!
Going in and out, is what Ginger does many times per day. Chasing squirrels is a favorite past- time. With her last "Haircut?", she now completely shaved and has no natural fur coat to keep her warm.
Feeding to birds is essential, as well. Even the squirrels, need to stock up on food.
Plants are all inside
... except those in the ground!
Last year, before the freeze, I had a 7 year old lemon tree, that I had started from seed, and then planted in the corner of my new home's backyard.
My beautiful tree was about to bloom the next summer, but the freeze brought different results.
About 15 feet to the right of the lemon tree, I'd also planted a grapefruit seed, which was a sapling of about a foot tall, when the freeze came.
Both trees, sadly appeared dead.
By spring, my HOA wanted the lemon tree cut down. Jim, my neighbor, came by and the tree was just a stomp, and sad reminder of it's past glory.
Pipes
The subdivisions that shut off water for 3 days, saved all the homeowners, thousands of dollars, in pipe repair. This year, the plan is to have my own water shut off.
Burst pipes caused water to be out for over a week, so this just might be the way to go.
The fix from last year included these additional shut off valves. Turning these to the right...
"Righty, tighty" reminds me which way is off!
Towels and pipe coverings and duct tapes, take care of any other outside spigots.
Personal
Keep gas tank full, check tire inflation and have ice scraper under the seat.
Have grocery staples, including bottled water.
Don't forget the toilet paper! Whenever there's a crisis this seems to be the hot commodity!
Have layers of clothing in car. I have a sweater, and an extra hoodie, usually for unexpected rain, ... Gloves or mittens, too.
Stay well rested, so your body is fit for change.
Expect the unexpected
"Better to be safe, than sorry".
With a plan, I don't have worry about what might happen.
WA Goals need a flexible plan , as well.
When setting goals, we need to consider these points...
- Define the goal clearly and write it down.
- Write down WHY you want this.
- Determine what would be needed to achieve the goal.
- Break to goal down to manageable steps.
- Look at possible hurdles that might arise.
- Set a time to work on and a time to complete.
- Be prepared to alter your direction, if necessary.
- Don't give up, even if you think an idea has hit a dead end.
- Take action daily to keep momentum.
- Expect some change of plummet, or set back. Learn from the experience.
Don't Bury Until Something is Actually Dead!
Back to my lemon tree and grapefruit seed...
After cutting down the lemon tree and removing the dead wood, I was pleasantly surprised when spring rolled on in. Instead of a tree, I now have a bush!
When I went to cut my lawn for the first time, again, I was amazed!
The grapefruit seedling, had also made it through! Today it is again about a foot tall.
Since I'd like them to make it through another turn in temperature, they, too, are now covered and protected for anything that may come our way.
By taken necessary actions ahead of time, I'm not blindsighted, in an emergency.
Life is a series of cycles, and so are our businesses.
Watch what works and repeat!
Cut off the deadwood, and look for new growth, as we continue.
"Waiting on the World to Change"-John Mayer
What are you doing while waiting?
Let's make some Progress each day!
That's it for tonight, my WA Friends!
Wishing you all a safe and productive weekend.
Heading up for the needed rest, as Tomorrow is a new day!
Night all!
Best.

I am from Missouri. I was in southeast Texas for a birthday on Feb 14th last year. Woke up to no electric, no water, and nowhere to purchase anything for miles.
My host gave me some gas and snacks for the trip home. Took almost 10 hours of driving to get out of Texas. Some of the worst driving experience I have had.
John
John, at least you did get a measure of Texas hospitality;)
It surely wasn't one of our better times.
No water or electric, means no coffee!
I wondered why this line was half a mile long?? They were going by Shipley's doughnuts.
If you were driving up 59/I-69, that road take forever even in good weather.
Hope you have a better birthday, this year, John.

Barb, beside "righty-tighty" is also punctuated by the "on off" with the appropriate arrows, my friend!
Plats are more resisilent than we think!
Let's just hope this Frebruary is not a reat of last yearS1
Also a very nice analogy to our dealings here in WA, too!
Enjoy your Frisatsu, Sis!

I just lost 3 paragraphs, Bro:(
Reader's Digest version...
Looking for right and left is awesome, if one can see these options. I found that difficult when trying to see the underside of the toilet:)
I'm feeling much better today, than lately. I choose to not talk about a problem, but focus on the solution, so it's best to go silent sometimes.
Have been consuming trainings.:)
Time for a power nap, so, Brudda,
TTFN!
We'll see you back at the Pub!

I choose to talk abbut the problem because possible solutions I have not considered often come to light, Sis! Hope your rest rejuvenates you!

I was just referring to my feeling like garbage.
I figured just today, that I'm holding a resentment! I didn't want this thing to begin with!!
Now that I see this I should start feeling better. The solution came as I shared it with another.
I try to avoid complaining about it.
LOL! I mentioned it to my kid today, and he said, Get away from me, I don't need to be sick!...Not the the reaction I expected! Ha!
He's been by for the last 4 weeks. I don't think he'll get anything. :)
Sis
I don't think that he will either, Sis! Yes, sometimes it is good to share how you're feeling, and then miraculously you feel better!

Hi, there Simone:)
I've been feeling a bit under the weather, as these temps go up and down.
Today, I'm feeling so much better.
I don't care to focus on the problem, so I'm better off, not sharing at times.
Sometimes, ...usually, it's better to spend time with self, and pray for some guidance. In quiet we get answers:)
I'm expecting a Miracle, every day, Lovely Simone.
Best!

There use to be a New Zealand band called “Split Enz” who sang 5 seasons in one day. That is NZ weather, changeable. So you had to adapt pretty fast Much as you are saying here. So I can relate to that analogy.
And I showed the last heading to my wife. Hehe. I can’t repeat what she said. Lol.

I wonder just what she was thinking!
How fun to see where each of our minds take us, when you share each other's adventures. Collective Consciousness...Loved Carl Jung:)

Hey there awesome blog post! I didn't realize you were in Texas, we live in North Texas near the Dallas area. You provided some real great information here on surviving the winter weather that we Texans are so notoriously bad at dealing with. I also especially enjoyed your plant anecdotes, as my business is in the gardening niche!
Glad you liked this Jeremy!
You really need to check out replays of December, I think. Jay built a Men's Gardening site, and showed how to connect with others through Pinterest and other great tips.
You will be amazed! He but site from ground up. He has month long topics. :)
I hope that the month?

Thank you so much for reminding me! I actually caught several of those early trainings but eventually started missing them because of homework and other responsibilities. Then I completely forgot about them! I need to dig back into those. I was a little nervous when he started doing the gardening niche, but it wasn't so bad as my website is geared towards fairy gardening and is very different than what he was building.
I loved the part where he made pins, and then connected with other sites.
Good way to get more traffic.
Love the replays, Jeremy!
