Hello

So I have been approached with an advertising offer for my website. They would provide a link that would appear on my home page, and vice versa.

Since this is

First of all, congratulate yourself, Brad. If you have attracted this attention that's a good sign - someone feels your site is worthy of attention and cross promotion. That's a vote of confidence.

That said, I wouldn't plunge in until I'd checked out the site and the site manager. Are they legitimate? Are they competitors? Are they substantial, in terms of traffic, expertise, credibility or raw customer value?

If you feel you can trust them, probably your customers will feel the same - so cross promotion can help your credibility and trust. If you don't trust them, they will likely hurt your credibility.

Be careful of competitor fishing expeditions, scams and sites of little interest to your niche. Otherwise, use your judgment and check them out. If they look good otherwise, be aware of the fact that alliances take time and energy. Don't jump in if you can't afford the distraction.

As for me, I love cross promotion, especially with like minded WA members. These can be great opportunities, but the do require extra time, effort and patience.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for the reply Steve
If and when I decide to do this, I still maintain control of my website-as I will have to insert their link, banner, etc myself correct?
Are there any limitations I should impose or watch for, and is there a way to gauge as to whether this spot for them will is helping me or not.
I've worked pretty hard on my website and don't want it all lost.

thanks gain
brad

If it is a typical text link or banner with a link, you retain control - typically control isn't the issue. I would primarily be concerned about reputation. It is unlikely you will lose control, but possible that you could lose trust, or visitors. When your visitors click this link, they will leave your site at least for a while. If this happens, it is a risk at best, and at worst it is an assault on your relationship with that visitor.

If traffic they send you has quality and volume similar to traffic you send them, and visitors find solid, relevant content at both sites, then it can be a win-win. If you are careful and both sites seem likely to benefit without taking business from each other, then it is a great thing. If not, then it's probably a mistake IMHO.

Best,
Steve

need some help here

so I signed for a affiliate program. They guy calls me today and proposes this-I use his website as my own-he will create a xxx.affiliate program.com/

This sounds very strange to me -- If they're setting up the site for you, why would they need you to supply them with a password for updates? To me, that's a huge red flag.

Have you done a search for the company and checked out its reviews? I'd suggest proceeding with extreme caution, if at all.

[added]
I just thought of a reason for them to ask you for a password -- Given the number of people who reuse the same password for multiple logins, they may be phishing you.

I have only been here since July but I am not familiar with an affiliate program calling with this kind of proposal. I am not understanding what kind of affiliate program this is. Usually you are adding affiliate links to your site and you are keeping your own site up to date. There could be something I am missing, but I agree with you...I'm not giving out passwords and usernames.

Hello all
I have now been diligently working with Wealthy Affiliate to create my website, my Google+, Facebook and other social links. I have posted what I think is very rel

Example:

A new computer local shop opens in you town and only sells high end very expensive computers. Now you do not know this new shop, are you buying right away or are you going to wait and see if this shop is trustable and not closing just 6 months after opening...

Trust needs to be earned, and that is not going to happen on such short notice. That will take time.

What do you sell, what do you provide on trustable useful content. Are you active on social platforms market yourself and you products? Once people start to trust you they will come and buy from you.

Normally first sales are 6-12 months earliest, unless you have another niche where you sell products to with supporting quality content, and even that takes time.

But once that trust curve is reached, you will sell.

Do you trust your affiliate program or network?
