Sunday’s Entertainment Blog #7 – Becoming a Writer

Last Update: June 29, 2014

Happy Sunday to my WA family, or Monday if you are reading this on Monday. Today's entertainment blog message is about becoming a writer, which all of us that create our own website content become over time. Some think that being a writer has to mean that you write books, stories or articles for a living. The title “Writer” applies to many things. I know people who are resume writers, copy writers, bloggers, and content writers. There are also ad writers, song writers, script writers, and many more types of writers.

I have heard many newbie WA members when it comes to creating content for their website say, “I am not a writer.” Guess what? None of us were before we started writing but once you start and you keep doing it, you will begin to get better at it because you are a new writer. Every new writer has to start from zero and continue to perfect their craft. Like everything in life, the more you practice it the better you will become at doing it.

Back in 2008 comedian George Carlin (R.I.P.) was doing an interview at the Paley Center, formerly known as The Museum of Television & Radio. He was being asked, when did he realize that he was a writer? He said that unlike the majority of comedians, he always would write his own routines. The more and more he did it the better his routines became and the bigger the desire to create more content. It got to a point where he enjoyed writing so much and was good at it that he started writing books in addition to his comedy performances.

If you have ever seen one of George Carlin's stand-up comedy routines where he goes on these long rants, if you listen closely to the words they are well crafted comedic poetry with a message. For example, in the below 3 minute routine he is talking about all of the modern day terminologies and how it relates to him. There are so many amazing things he says like, “I interface with my database. My database is in cyberspace. So I'm interactive and I'm hyperactive and from time to time I'm radioactive.” Click the picture to watch and enjoy!

George Carlin's - I am a modern man

It’s one thing to be able to craft such a great piece of writing but to get up on stage in front of a huge audience and perform it without a mistake, just shows you what practice will do for the writer and performer. So the next time you sit down to write content for your website don’t be scared of what you create. Write it, put it out there for review, accept all negative criticism, make adjustments, and keep writing. Eventually you will be a better writer.

THIS WEEK’S HUMOROUS PICTURES

GOOGLE EASTER EGGS

I end today's entertainment blog post with a couple more Google Easter eggs. The first one will require you to click on the “I'm feeling lucky” link to the right of the search query in the drop down once you point to it.

Type in Google search - find chuck Norris

Then click I'm Feeling Lucky

Read the warning message Google gives you.

This next Easter egg is a shooting game which eventually you will lose. You will not need to click I'm feeling lucky for this one to start. Just type it in and click search. There will appear a bunch of ‘O’ that will begin to break apart your search results. They will attack from the top of the screen first and then from the right. You can destroy them by clicking on them 4-5 times really quickly.

Type in Google search – zerg rush

Then click search and start paying.

It's amazing how he can remember all of that and still perform it flawlessly in front of a live crowd. George was amazing!

He was quite the intellect; he had a razor sharp mind and his political commentaries were always fun to listen to.

And he was also a writer. Not only did he write all of his comedy routines but he also wrote a couple of books too.

I was going to ask about that. That makes these videos even more impressive. Just being able to do the delivery on those sequence of words was amazing , yet having the ability to write that material shows you what a talented man he was,

I write but I dont feel it's good. Especially when it comes to fashion and related subjects. I read my Twitter feed for my shop and it amazes me how the lady's can come up with stuff to say on their feeds. I keep trying if you eve go to my store you will see what I mean :)

It takes time to write good but you have keep trying. It took me about 2-3 years before I felt comfortable with what I wrote. No one starts out perfect. Like Kyle says, there is no such thing as a perfect or near perfect writer.

Boy you got me there, by God's grace I sell. Cause I just list the important stuff and add it to my store. I think the most I do is say something like, very pretty shirt. I'm telling you I have no flair for fashion, it's business casual for me and does not have to be name brand as long as it's comfortable and not too tight. LOL I think PLR will be the answer :)

I meant what would you tell people if they were standing right in front of you and asked you those questions in person.

If you never try to do any writing you cannot succeed. All of us had to start from scratch and if me and everyone else can do it so can you.

Great post! I agree with you except that on some subjects I can't write anything. Take fashion I need some articles to post on my G+ to promote my e-store which sells clothing. I also need fresh ads to send out to the lists, well I am not able to write fashions articles or get some good ads tp flow out of me. I think I will have to look at Fiverr.com I'm not that creative on some subjects. You on the other hand always write good ones.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
What do you do if someone were to ask you in a conversation about the clothing you sell? What do you tell them if they ask you for a recommendation on some clothing that's good for the warm weather and why is it good?

How would you personally describe it to them? Do you just list what you sell or do you talk it up and make it sound exciting?

If you tell them what you sell and give examples as to why what you have is what they should get, you do the same thing for your content. Just write with the same personality you use when talking to someone. That's all I do.

George Carlin is crazy!!! It must have taken him days to get this routine down. It was a good one. The one time I saw him (which was MANY years ago), his routine was XXX rated..not enjoyable. So, it's true --- you DO get better with age. Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it anyway!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Yeah some of his earlier routines were kind of raw to say the least but he did mellow a little bit as he got older. We all get better with age. :-)

Just fabulous Robert, very funny stuff. As an Aussie, I have never heard of George Carlin and I am sorry that now you have introduced me to him, to learn that he has passed on. He is brilliant with words and must rehearse ad infinitum to get it so good as he does. Thanks for that and of course you other humorous bits. I think you deserve the new title of Boomer The Humour Man! Cheers, Simon

Boomer the Humor Man! LOL I like that! :-)

You are welcome Simon! Yes George Carlin was a great comedian and then actor/writer here in the U.S. starting back in the late 1970s all the way up until his death in 2008. He wrote all of his own routines and practiced his craft quite well as you can tell from his stage performance.

Not just the words, the timing the rhythm and just to remember the stuff ....no reading cards. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

Good stuff. Learned a lot from Carlin, read a lot of his books. My favorite - Brain Droppings - really learned a lot about myself. Then his best standup - Stuff - Hilarious. Played it before and after I moved.
Always nice to get back to you when I can. Thanks again, Robert. ^_~

As I said above, once he realized how good of a writer he was he started writing a lot and started writing for both his comedy routines and his books. He was a writing machine and a good one at that, as you have experienced.

You're welcome Gilles! - You are only a weak writer because you don't use your writing muscle enough. Once you start writing more, as in everyday, you will get better at it over time. It's just like exercise, the more you do it the better you get.

Well said Robert. Being a good or great writer is something we develop over time with practice. That's exactly it. We each just need to enjoy the journey, realize what we have to say is valuable, get out of our own way and allow our selves to grow as a writer. Practice and consistency ALWAYS gets us what we want, as certain as gravity works. :-) Thanks for the great post!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Well said Drew! Too many times people try to be perfect and wind up making their content sound worse. Just go with the flow and make corrections later. The more you practice at something the better you will be. It's like a baby learning how to walk. Clumsy at first but better as time goes by.

Mourning Robert. Thought you might like a George Carlin story which re-iterates what you say about him in this article. In my former job in Las Vegas I waited on and got to know many celebs including George. He always stayed in is room and I wanted him to get out and have some fun, So I invited him to go to bingo with me. I had just hit $56,000. He wasnt impressed and said "No" I'd rather stay here and work on my papers. His little Maltese was his love in those days. Hope you like this short story.

Actually Ken I wanted to show a video of a stand up comic for today's blog. While trying to find a non-vulgar GC video I came across an interview he did not long before he died. He was talking about how he discovered that he was a writer that performed his writing creations. It was at that point where I decided to write this blog about being a better writer and to use a GC comedy routine as the teaching entertainment.

I'm glad you liked it! - Long years of practice Pete. Just as we all get better at writing content and remembering things from hours of practice and doing, George was able to do what he did all the way up until the day he died.

You're right, it takes practice to get better at writing. I'm also kind of a self-critic. I need to just think about creating. Improvements can always be made.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Creation always comes first Helen and improvements last. This is why I mentioned writing content out loud in my blog from a couple of weeks ago. It helps me to create better content and avoid much of the improvements that would normally come later because by hearing my content as I write it I can make those improvements as I go.
