What About Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving in the United States is coming up in a few days and most of us are looking forward to eating ourselves silly and watching football. But is that all it's about? Food and games?

Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday and it's not a political rally.

It's simply a day to be thankful for what or who makes our life worth living. It's a day to be thankful for family--yes, even the uncle who chews smelly cigars or the sister-in-law who wants to know all the sexy details about our latest love affair.

It's as simple as being thankful for having a job, a roof over our heads or clothes on our backs. It's being thankful for living in a country where we can pretty well say what we think, go where we want, and do what pleases us--within the limits of the laws of the land.

We are not the only country in the world that sets aside a day to be thankful. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.

Thanksgiving festivals are usually harvest related and China, Brazil, Malaysia, Korea, Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, Liberia, South India, Ghana all celebrate some kind of festival of thanks for what foods the earth has yielded during the year.

Most of us remember the story of the pilgrims: A small band of people came to the new world to find a new life for themselves. They landed too late to plant and harvest food that fall. The New England winter was brutal and many of them died in the first year.

The next year was better. The native people befriended them and showed them how to grow crops. That fall the pilgrims had a harvert feast and invited the natives to come celebrate with them. That was the first unofficial Thanksgiving, in 1621.

It was much later that a national day of Thanksgiving was actually set aside. In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the next to last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, a joint resolution of the U.S.Congress set Thanksgiving Day on the 4th Thursday of November.

Now it is a day of thanks, a day to enjoy great food, watch a parade, cheer on our favorite football team, and start the Christmas shopping count down.

So,which ever country you hail from, let us be thankful for all that we have, especially those who love us and cheer us on in all our endeavors.

Thank you for such a thoughtful post. I am especially thankful this year since I came close to dying twice. I am thankful that I am able to just enjoy life and its many blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
It is not celebrated here in Australia but it should be as we embrace all the other areas of life here.
Have a great time and all the best.
Darren :)
