What is italics used for to promote a website with keywords, and do italics help search bots decide what your page or post is about when reading code?
Well the answer is, YES!! Italics can tell search engines what your page is about when placed in normal text mode in your content.
What Is A Italic And How Are They Used?
There is some confusion about what is a italic and how are they used when it comes to placing text to rate for keywords. All search engine bots use italics to decipher the code within normal text within an page or post. Italics can only be used in text mode, and must not be placed in H3 sub headings!
What Is Italics In Text Mode?
The whole idea of using italics in text mode is solely for the purpose of inserting chosen keywords that are relative to the topic been written. Say I had a title saying, "Looking After A Cat." Directly under my title, I want to add some text relating to the title header underneath. Now, to us humans, we can read the text and understand what the information is telling us straight away, but for search bots the text looks like just a bunch of words.
When inserting italics into your text, try and include what your title is saying.
Example Title: Looking After A Cat
In your text directly under the title, you can write something like this; Looking after a cat can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. If you look at the text, Looking after a cat can be rewarding, I have captured the phrase and highlighted it in italics. This lets google bots read the captured phrase and deciphers it into; Looking After A Cat; looking after a cat can be rewarding etc, etc. Just add more italics throughout your paragraph that relate to looking after a cat.

In the image below, you will see the WordPress menu bar. Once you have highlighted your key phrases in "blue," press the symbol which looks like a slanting capital I. By doing this, everything highlighted will become italic coded.

Search engine bots are in a way like us, if they cant understand what's going on... They will leave!! Thanks for the info. I've only joined WA recently and have looked back over my posts to make sure there's an SEO title etc. I tried the italics on a keyword phase in the first paragraph. When I went to preview mode I could see the italics. If I was to highlight keywords in the article would it look odd? Having italics scattered throughout the post? Or are they only used in H2 headings?
My suggestion is to nit over use any specific font style in order to maximize its impact. You bring up a valid question though.
