Make Sure You Save Your Work!
The Scenario
The baby is crying, and so is your 5 year old who just had work done at the dentist that morning. You are trying to get in a few minutes to work on your post that has been waiting to be finished for two days straight. Then you look at the clock and realize that you still hadn't done school with your oldest child, the dishes were still waiting to be done, and the living room had been torn apart during a theatrical performance of "Elsa, Trapped in the Dungeon," during the 4 to 6 hours that the pain medication staved off the 5 year old's tooth pain.
So, you get up, walk away from the computer, and take care of what is more important...feeding your baby while taking a quick 20 minute nap on the couch, while being serenaded by your 5 year old Elsa, who is dancing on the coffee table, and your oldest ignoring your demands to do her Math work and instead adding to the fray with American Heritage Girls camp songs.
When the baby is put down for a nap, the dishes are in the dishwasher, the living room cleaned up, and the other girls are watching TV, you finally sit down to finish that post.
Some great wording about some awesome free classes online, and several added links later, you press "Preview" to see how it is looking.
"Error. Try Loading Again."
WHAT! No, no, no, no, no, no! (Hitting "Save Draft")
And the inevitable happens...
Half of your work...GONE!
How Could I Have Been So Stupid!
Now I have to go back and try to remember what it is that I even said.
I have to go back to all my notes about the classes so I can make sure the information I give is correct and everything is included that needs to be.
And I have to look up all my links AGAIN and add them in one at a time.
So, if you are wondering what happened and why I lost almost all my work, the answer is in the title. I didn't save my work. I didn't "Save Draft" periodically, or anytime I needed to walk away from my computer. What a stupid, rookie mistake. And though I am a rookie here on Wealthy Affiliate, I know better.
Now I will have to put off my post being published for another day, which will be interrupted by all my other daily responsibilities. I am a mom, first and foremost, and my children are the most important thing right now, but this is still frustrating.
Learn from me, those who just walk away, or go to bed at night, leaving their "Edit Post" page open until the next morning, without saving their work (just like me)...just click your "Save Draft" button and THEN walk away. It will save you from my fate. From having to look up, copy and paste, all the links that you had, and re-write half of your post.
It will save you from wanting to throw your computer out the window, or bashing it in with a hammer. I mean, come on! Computers should know better. They are the intelligent beings, right? It should have known that it was the smarter one out of the two of us and automatically saved my work, because I obviously don't have the brains to remember to do it myself.
Now I have a new mantra. "Save Draft, then walk away! Save Draft, then walk away! Save Draft, then walk away!"
Update: And the computer has proven to be the superior being after I found, at the top of my screen, "Restore backup." All my work was there. Thank you my wonderful, wonderful computer! :-)

I had this happen recently when I was writing a post for WA! I had been working on this post for a while, was just finishing up and the lights flickered but I just kept going and then we lost power and I yelled, "Oh if I had just hit save when the lights flickered" But I decided to try rebooting and then checking my post drafts and sure enough it was there! I was so happy!
See, and that is exactly why computers are smarter than us...it periodically saves our work for us. :-) I was sooooo relieved to find what I lost. I didn't want to have to start over again.

:) I do know what you are talking about, I have now a "new" computer, but my previous had the habbit to go out without any warning about 5-7 times a day, I had to rewrite so much, what effected my mood in a very bad way, so my husband said at last, please take my computer! Please!! Please:)??!!! (I never found any back-up:()
Awe Loes, I'm so sorry. I know that is definitely frustrating.
