Today is Anzac Day, which is commemorated on April 25 each year. A very special public holiday, which is sad but also one with pride and admiration for our soldiers along with our unsung heroes.

It honours the memory of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who formed part of the allied expedition that landed at Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915.

Approximately 16,000 soldiers, who became colloquially known as "Anzacs" immediately faced opposition.

The Anzacs charged bravely up the steep and almost impossible barren slopes of Gallipoli.

Sadly, on the first night, around 2000 men were killed.

For Australians, the image usually associated with 25th April 1915, is that of Australian soldiers charging bravely up the steep and barren slopes of Gallipoli.

Dawn Service

1915,

In Sydney, Australia, Dawn services started at 4.20 am, normally held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, which was later followed by a march through the central CBD streets at 9 am.

Other states in Australia are holding their services, which will be at different times due to the time zones in Australia.

Nevertheless, in Sydney, there were over 40,000 people lining the streets during the parade, giving thanks and cheering the soldiers or in this case, relatives of the soldiers, who gave their all in many ways.

Unsung Heroes

Always remember that there are not only our brave soldiers who defend but also many unsung heroes, which many people may not think about during this difficult time.

There are our nurses and doctors.

Less known is the picture of an Australian nurse on that same day attending to hundreds of battered and bleeding men on the decks and in the confined wards of a hospital ship.

Wounded soldiers were transported out to the Gascon lying off Anzac Cove.

They are also the unsung heroes of this terrible war.

Finally, the last ode to all who gave their lives to protect us then and today.

I lost my Australian hero a few years back. He was a fine example of soldiers of war who fight for their country and their families. So many are lost in war. Many more live after the war with missing parts of their bodies - they remain daily heroes.
May we live and be free in whatever country we reside.

Thank you Christie and sorry for the loss

Sad but important to remember. It reminds me of the song Green Fields of France,
