WordPress 3.8 update is available.
The new WP update to version 3.8 is out. And boy does it look different!
Very modern and extremely colourful. In fact there are 8 colour schemes to choose from. It is very inviting and I'm sure it will cheer some of us up working with the new look.
They have added a new theme Twenty Fourteen as well.
BTW - don't forget to do a backup of your site BEFORE you do updates - including to any new Wordpress versions.. A backup should be part of your site maintenance on a regular basis

As you said Annie, I too always recommend that Members have a full backup before updating, https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/backup-wordpress-to-dropbox-tutorial and they check the changelogs of their themes and plugins to ensure compatibility or test on a dummy siterubix site. I much prefer to wait for the #.#.1 or the #.#.2 updates, which will incorporate any bug fixes. There's nothing worse than hitting the update button only to discover you've ended up with a non-working site, especially if it's your primary earner. It's also not possible to reinstate WordPress 3.7 on some hosting services if there are incompatibilities with themes and plugins with 3.8 which can leave Members having to switch themes or disable functions until their developers "catch up". :) Rich.
Hi Rich, I sometimes wait for a few days too. I wonder why any updates would mess up someones site. Maybe, at times, it comes down to the theme being used that perhaps, is not created by an experienced person?
It depends on WordPress itself, it's an open source project and created and maintained by volunteers. It's not a commercial product. I can't remember whether it was 3.4 or 3.5 that opened a window into backdoor hacks that had to be patched with a whole series of #.#.+1 updates. It also has to be born in mind that many developers of free themes and plugins are not under any pressure from paying customers to immediately maintain compatibility with the latest updates of WordPress itself. :) Rich.
Thanks for your answer and help, Rich. I might be one of the lucky ones. I've got a Zee theme and they appear to be very knowledgeable. They've got quite a few free themes in WP. I believe all, or most, can be upgraded for a fee, to get additional features.
Ken, after you did the update you just scroll down the page telling you what the update is about and you'll see the colour schemes to choose from. I tried 4 as I didn't like the black one either, and then chose the red sunset colour one. Maybe you clicked away from the page and can't get back to it?
Thanks Annie. I saw that there was a new update, but was wondering if it would throw current content out of kilter. From your comments expressing delight, I guess not.
Oh, yes, I certainly do backup - too much hard work has gone in for it to be lost.
No, so far what I've checked on my site is OK. The dashboard is looking so refreshing now. BTW I will PM you later re the government dumping near the Barrier Reef. Can you believe it?! Last gov. banned it this ones, says yeah go for it.

Always need to have regular backups and updates!! If your site crashes, there will be no amount of appreciation large enough to express for the backup!
Too true Terea. I think most of us forget to backup often enough.
