Major Scam Alert For Canadians
Hi guys,
I know I have appreciated it when members inform us about scams that are going around, so I would like to share my experience with all of you.
This one is for Canadians as it involves the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency). This morning I got a call from someone claiming to be from the CRA. They said that I owe taxes from the period 2010 - 2015 in the amount of almost $3,000.00.
They said that if I don't choose to do a OOCR (out of court resolution) and pay the money right away, they will file a law suit against me in the amount of 95,000.00. Not only that, but they will issue an arrest warrant (for committing acts of fraud) and all of my assets will be frozen.
They proceeded to ask me how much money I have in my bank account and what is the limit on my credit card. They gave me detailed instructions on how to get the money to them.
They knew my name, telephone # of course, as well as my address. I played along and didn't want to let on that I knew it is a scam.
All of this regarding my taxes is completely untrue which I immediately verified with the CRA as soon as I hung up the phone. I also filed a police report and they told me that they have received many similar complaints about this scam.
These guys are very detailed and organized, they read aloud various "legal statements" and resorted to threats and scare tactics.
Please don't be fooled if this happens to you. Unfortunately, it seems many people have fallen for it (mostly seniors) and these scammers are currently under investigation.
The police do not know how they are obtaining people's addresses. They claim to have previously been at my door and left a notice to call their office immediately. I never received such a notice. They said that because I did not respond, they had no choice but to take legal action against me.
I spoke to 2 people, both of whom had foreign accents. They have called 4 times since the initial call this morning (I did not answer these calls). In a voice message, they gave me a deadline to pay by 6 p.m. (which is in 40 minutes from now)!
Be cautious everyone!
Take care,
Anna

Oh Anna,
I am so sorry you were put under this stress...and not just a one-time call, either(?!!)
That would sure make the ol' blood pressure shoot up!:(
It's good you are so savvy and smart, luv.
The part I saw right through, was the "Out of court resolution".
Only scammers try that one, I think;)
Well, scammers and scumballs...
THANK YOU, our Canadian sister, for spreading this vital info to us.
And as all Canadians know, it is Thanksgiving weekend tomorrow (Oct.8)...so big blessings for a nice one for you and yours, Anna:)

Thank you so much Terry! ;)
Get this...because I didn't call back and meet their deadline, a guy called pretending to be a police officer and said they are sending someone right away to put me in handcuffs and take me to jail.
A few minutes later they were pounding at my door!! They know where I live!! I've never seen anything taken to this extreme before and it's actually getting a little scary!
You had a GREAT reaction, CONGRATS ! They are better not call at my home I will laugh at them like crazy like I did with the last one who called my friend ... :) Cheers, Take care to you Annaraella' Jeff
Hey Jeff,
Thanks so much! It kept getting more and more ridiculous as the call went on too! It's just shocking the lengths that they will go to now!
Take care too - hope you have a great night! :)
