Do we need to have straight As?

It's the time of the year again, students and parents getting excited about class rankings, GPAs, scholarships, awards. Students with exceptional high academic merits are very much admired in our society and everybody wishes to be as smart or secretly hopes his or her child might one day acccumulate similar merits.

It is true that there are people who are very gifted and everything seems to come to them easily. They don't seem to study as hard as somebody else and they excel likewise in different academic areas. When I was young I was always a little bit jealous of people like that, it seemed so unfair!

But once I grew older, I realize it's not all about having straight As or excellent academic rankings. I tried to convey to my daughter that education is about learning for life, about expanding her horizon, being interested in different areas and develop various interests and passions as she grows older. In my opinion parents should stimulate their children's natural curiosity and creativity and, since I love books, promote reading.

But that's not all, to be successful in life you need defiinitely some common sense and some social skills. We are familiar with the picture of the "nerd" who is too absorbed in his books and knows very little about the reality of life and who is kind of awkward when it comes to interacting with other people.

Being a straight A student in high school or college doesn't mean you will be a highly successful professional. And by " highly successful" I don't mean necessarily getting rich. It takes a lot of persistence and having a goal-oriented mind to get where you want to be. It takes somebody who is used to struggle for what he wants without being discouraged right away. What strikes me when I read prominent people's success stories (monetary succes or other type of professional success) is the fact that sometimes they had to be flexible in their professional paths and that they had to be very creative in order to work through failures.

I think building an internet marketing business requires some of these personality traits. I don't think somebody needs to be a nerd or be a hightly ranked college graduate to be successful in this business. First of all, you need to have some interests or passions you want to build on. Stay informed and keep an open mind, there are always new things to discover. Be patient because it will take time to build something, I am only at the beginning of the course and I realize it will take me longer to get where I want to be, but I don't want to give up and every week I struggle but I do make some progress after all. It takes persistence and I do have a goal in mind, and I have to say I do like the creative side of this job!

What an accomplishment if somebody makes it through all the tutorials, I just hope I'll make it that far one day!

Andrea

Wonderful Andrea,
Things getting better and better

I commend those people who are naturally "book smart"..

I think that no matter where you are on the spectrum - very creative or intellectual - I think it's the wise person who looks to stretch themselves in all areas.

So true! "It's not all about having straight As or excellent academic rankings" this theory is not a guarantee for success for anyone.

It's only as I got older & had life experience that I came to realise that we are not all the same, don't think the same. Personal & financial success can be achieved in so many different ways. Proof of this is all around us.

I so wish the powers that be / society would stop putting such emphasis on high grades & make everyone believe that that is THE way to be successful in life.

I'm with you where you say "that education is about learning for life, about expanding her horizon, being interested in different areas and develop various interests and passions".

By keeping your goal in sight & working one lesson at a time you'll make it through all the tutorials Andrea! :)

Goal oriented and keep a flexible mind are the keywords, LOL!
Thanks Brigitte.
