How long does it take to write 1000 words

Okay, Let's time it, I start this post at 10:15.

Now most of you know that to have a sufficient post, you need to write 1000 words. How long does it take to write 1000 words? We test that here today and talk about some tips to make writing easier.

When I first started to write posts on my website, it was a bit intimidating. It is now second nature to me. Thanks to Wealthy Affiliate, it is the best way to write for a living.

So at this point, I have 100 words. That seemed easy! What time is it? It is 10:21.

So that means, at that rate, I should be right around done in just over an hour. There will be grammar check and images of course. Then if there were any links to share (if it were on my website) those things can add up to probably another 10-30 min depending.

Moving on to the writing tips

Well, there are a few tips to get better at writing. So Let's talk about how can you increase your writing speed and not feel intimidated by writing 1000 words.

I have hit the 200 mark and the time now is 10:28

This puts me at a near 15 minutes so far. Granted I have had 2 phone calls and had to message someone as well as minor moments of talking with my toddler.

Back to work...

Tips on how to write 1000 words

1) Place your headers into the post, also write a sentence or three under each header. Fill in the rest with the info and details you may have left out. Place the pictures also a description for each picture and all you may need is a conclusion and your done.

300 words now. Time is 10:34

  • So why does this work? When you map out your framework also fill in the gaps, you can be efficient because it is easier to focus. If you do not do this, you will be staring at a blank page and it may feel more intimidating.

2) This is my favorite tip... Write a couple 3,000-5,000 word posts. Seriously, this will give you a whole new perspective.

  • Why that works? When you write a super long post with 3, 4 or 5,000 words also you go back to a post and write 1,000 words, It seems so short and easy!

Just over 400 words now. Time 10:42

See, almost half-way done. When you look at it, every hundred words seems quite short! It just sounds like a lot. Remember that the next time you are intimidated by the sound of a 1000 word post.

3) Do your research and study, study, study. Keep writing those posts. Become an authority! Have your research and notes ready ahead of time. That truly does help a lot!

  • This is a "long term" tip but will help you write faster and easier. You will become more confident in what you are writing about. The more knowledge you have, the less time it takes to write a post. Become an authority in your niche. This is part of the process that is taught here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Okay a bit past 500 words now. 555 to be exact.

This post has been a breeze. There are other things that can help as well. Its important to be able to meet that 1000 word goal.

So where are we at now, the time is 10:54

I am not quite ready to tally it up so Let's finish out this post.

600 words now, gosh it seems to be happening faster now that we are closing in to the end of the post here! :)

What if you are a slow writer?

Okay, I have been timing myself and as I write, I have distractions. The clock is still rolling because it is natural to have interruptions and each 1000 words will take a different amount of time to write.

That being said, if you are a slow writer, no worries, it may take you 10 min more or even an hour more. You can do it!

700 words now. Time is 11:04

When you write a review post, it will take longer

So this post has been an "off the top of my head" post. It is easier to write those posts rather than a review post.

When you are writing a review post, having the Headers in place and the research already done and the studying out of the way, that will go a long way in making the 1000 word goal a lot easier.

I like my review posts to be longer as well. There is your 3,000 word post for ya!

800 words now. Time 11:11

What is your experience, are you able to write a 1000 words with ease?

900 words, Time 11:19

How long does it take to write 1000 words, in conclusion...

Now, just for fun I have been sharing the time for every 100 words. It is in my hope that this has given you some perspective on how long it will take for a mere 100 words and as you can see, it goes pretty fast! Seriously though, if you have not already tried writing a couple 3,000 or 5,000 word posts I encourage you to try it out because after that, to write 1000 words will seem fast and you will wonder why it was challenging to begin with.

1000 words! YAY time now is 11:26

Total time for this 1,000 word post was 71 min. That is an average of 7 min per 100 words. Now to add a couple touch ups and publish it. Done, Yay! :)

1045 words total.

I created this post on June 28th 2019. In going thru my posts to update them, there are a few that dont need updated and this is one of them. Tho, I have decided to adjust the tags and also was able to draw fresh inspiration from this post. Updating your old posts is something I recommend.

Hi Amelita, this was a very interesting read for me as I have done an exercise of writing for 30 minutes as was a requirement for one of the lessons in the Affiliate Bootcamp. Phase 3 lesson 6 to be exact.

Kyle required us to go to the online stopwatch and start it and write whatever came to mind for the 30 minutes. He then asked us to leave a comment on the discussion thread for it as to what our results were.

Mine was 883 words for the 30 minutes and there was no editing, no titles or sub-titles, and no images. Just type and see what we come up with. Now, after I did that I had to add a conclusion and edit it for mistakes and add my images. It ended up being used on my website as one of my blogs.

It made me realize that this business takes no big amount of time and if I did that every night...wow, the content that would be on my website. Now, we do have to take into consideration the keyword research and image searches.

So, to write 1000 words, not a big deal really and anyone of us here should be able to that quite easily.

I wish you the best!

Bob M

That sounds like a fun challenge! Great way to learn a bit of what it takes to be in this business. As you said, the challenge helped you to understand that it dont take very much time to write a post.

If we could write a post every day for a few months, that would be substantial growth in our online business and websites!

Thanks for your comment Bob.

It was a fun challenge, but now it seems I have other challenges to work through. This last year did not help with my daughter being virtual. Now she struggles.

My wife and I need to help her understand what she didn't learn. 6th grade has its own challenges. I try to do what I can on my website, but these challenges seem to get in the way now. I will manage it though.

I wish you the best!
Bob

Thank you.
Yes, having the kids doing school at home on the computer gave a lot of families extra challenges for sure!
As a mom of 5 kids, I can relate. Hoping the best for the kids this year. Today was the first day back to school for mine.

Hopefully the school will have some time to help play catch up. Just masks on the school bus for now.

Hope you are able to get back on track with your website. Sometimes we just dont have the available time needed to thrive as an affiliate. Life is sure to keep us busy.

All the best to you and your family Bob
-Amelita

5 kiddos... yeah, you're busy... LOL! I am getting there as far as getting back on track. So, I'll just keep plugging away.

Take care and only masks on buses here as well.

Glad to hear you are getting back on track.
Thanks Bob

I'm one of the lucky ones. If I am writing about a subject I enjoy, sometimes I write too much! Better that than not enough.

That is lucky Fran. It takes talent to write a hearty post and it seems you have the knack to write ;)
Glad to hear from you
All the best

Writing for me has always been an issue. I'm strong in math and science, but writing takes me all day. I procasinate, get distracted, and it takes forever. I always waited to the last minute to start writing because the pressure of meeting that deadline always makes my ideas flow. So I use that now and set my own deadlines for when to write and complete posts for my page to keep me focus. Great post and thanks for the insight on how to write a 1000 words post.

Hi there Danielle.
I can relate with you, having a deadline can put added pressure on a person to focus and finish a task. It can be a good type of stress if you work good under pressure, which it sounds like you do.

One thing I discovered while writing this post is that when I kept record of the "time" it took me, it pushed me to focus and get the post written which meant that I chose to be less distracted and decided to wait on checking my email (for example) amongst other things.
Sometimes life throws us a ton of distractions and we can spend all day writing a post that truly would take an hour.

Maybe you can try the "timing" method :) it provides that added "working under pressure with a deadline" feeling :)

All the best to you, thank you for stopping in Danielle

I find that once I get going on a post, it takes on its own rhythm. Sometimes I am startled to see a large number when I finish a post in wordpress and sometimes I find I'm done at maybe 600 words. Whatever it is, I go with it.

Rosana, you make a good point here, a post can take on a rhythm all its own. It's nice to be able to get lost in the writing :)

Having posts with different lengths is appreciated by Google so your writing style seems fun. I think 800 words is the lowest I have tried.
If I were to allow myself to write a 600 word post, this may help me to publish more often. You can always go back and add to a post. I like this and may need to start giving myself permission to write more freely.

One thing that counts towards the post word count is the comments which is great for a shorter post. Here at WA, we can always request lots of comments for that post giving us a great added bonus :)

Thanks for sharing with us :)
All the best to you Rosana

When I started out I found difficult to reach the 1000 words.

Today I finished 1800 post review. It took me 4 hours, but it was with screenshots, research and some pictures related to the review.

I have no problems to reach 1400 to 1600 word per post.
Practice makes perfect.
And English is not my first language.
That is just a reminder for those just like me
😉
Cheers
Mike😁

Hi there Mike
Thank you for chatting about how long it took you to write your nearly 2,000 word review. Reviews do take longer for sure as we have more time invested overall to ensure the reader has plenty of info.

Writing longer posts are great for earning Googles trust as they are sure to provide what the reader needs.

Glad you chimed in. You are impressive with your language abilities. How great to be able to speak a second language!

All the best to you Mike :)

When I first started this I used to stress about how to write 1000 words.
Now I don't even think about the numbers...the blog unrolls in it's and mine own way and the numbers add up...in more ways than 1

Over time, writing does seem less intimidating and you know your abilities :) Glad to hear you are now comfortable with the process.
-Amelita

It takes practice. The more we write "consistently", the better we will get.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, very true :) thank you for your thoughts.

Serendipity is rife at the moment, it makes me feel very connected throughout the platform. Yesterday's post was a 'challenge' as per writing within a time frame and creating something of meaning at least. Total length 1091 Time elapsed before spell check and images 56 minutes.
Tip ? Put headphones on so people think you're listening to something and won't disturb you. Yeah right.

Happy feelings are shared quite well around here and are very common, yes. :) At times there is some grief but such is life.

Well, I can relate to the headphone idea.
It mostly works for me.
I am a mom of a few kids and some days, it seems as though they act out just out of boredom. On those days, I put on my headphones and listen to music and do my best to oversee them while tuning them out.
That seems to work. For some reason, if I cannot "hear" them, they have nearly no reason to argue.

The overall average does seem to be around an hour. This is helpful to me and others, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

You're very welcome.
