3 Tips For Commenting On An Unfamiliar Niche
I use the SiteComments platform a lot to get some comments on my posts. People have given some lovely comments and I've had quite a number of meaningful conversations about the manga we read and the anime we watch.
However, I've lately begun to see a lot more feedback in the SiteComments platform and that's a bit concerning for me. I've disapproved a lot more feedback-comments than approved relevant ones and that shouldn't be the case, I feel.
I feel guilty disapproving people but these comments can be seen on my site and well, I don't want my visitors to see feedback of my website layout on say, my review on Bleach (a manga). Some people put feedback as a substitute for comments because they have no idea what to comment on. I understand that my niche isn't relevant for some people, especially the older generation but that shouldn't stop you from asking questions on it.
So to decrease the rate of disapproving people and to increase relevant comments, here are some tips for commenting on website in which the niche is unfamiliar to you:
Asking to explain your niche
I don't know how many will actually like this but for me, I don't mind if anyone asks me to explain the world of anime and manga. In fact, strap in for a 1000 word explanation covering history to prevailing trends. I may tire you out lol.
Being a newbie to a niche shouldn't stop you from asking that question because I'm sure a lot of your websites are based off your passions in life. Would you be happy explaining your niche to a new reader, I know I would, and I have done so a few times.
I believe asking to explain your niche is a lot better that comments like, "I don't know about your niche but you're doing a good job." or "I don't know about your niche but your site needs to improve in terms of the layout".
In addition, the long explanation will add to the number of characters in the original post so you can actually rank better on Google.
So, number 1: ask to explain your niche
Asking for recommendations as a beginner
This question is perfect for my niche as everyone who is a fan of anime and manga will be able to recommend beginner sets that can properly introduce readers to the community.
Not sure about the niche? Ask what the blogger will recommend to beginners. Perfect, relevant comment because it is about the content of the website.
I'm sure a lot of other niches can do the same thing: health and fitness, money making, pet care, etc. assuming that you already made a post targeted at beginners. Plus, by putting internal links in the comments, SEO ranking will improve a lot since you're directing the viewer to other places on your site.
So, number 2: Ask for beginner sets
Ask if I know so-and-so product
In my case, people ask me if I know Naruto or Fairy Tail (both manga) which can look like a lousy comment because duh, everyone in the community knows these two series. However, I think this is a good comment because it's related to my content. It may be a newbie question but as long as it is relevant, I'm totally fine with it.
I don't know how many of you will actually like questions like this but let us not forget that we have websites to help others. In my case, my site is to help people obtain physical manga books easier so anyone asking me about certain manga is a good thing because I can direct them to the respective review.
Mention a product related to the post of niche. It can be the product that the blogger is presenting or even a related product that you've seen somewhere else before. Just mention it! Even if the product has already been mentioned by the blogger, great! All the blogger has to do is direct you to the post by adding internal links. Even if the product is at the back of your mind and you never paid attention to the specifics, mention it anyway. Anything relevant in the comments is better than feedback-comments.
So, number 3: Ask if I know so-and-so product
Commenting in general
I like to think that everyone in WA knows the difference between comments and feedback but I still like to direct you to this blog post by Lynne who gives a pretty comprehensive breakdown on the differences.
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/quality-commenting-the-do-s-and-don-ts/how-to-give-quality-comments
Read her post if you have a history of getting your comments disapproved because they were borderline feedback or if you are genuinely unsure of the differences. Don't worry, I don't fault you for the confusion, we are all learning here. Even I had to redo the way I was commenting because I had the habit of rambling.
So that concludes my post, I hope my tips can help those who want to comment on interesting but unfamiliar niches. Note that this is based on my experience and I know others may disagree. Regardless, I do like hearing other's opinions on it so feel free to comment down below :)

I agree with you here, Ann.
When we set up our site comments profiles, we select various interests that we're happy to receive comment requests for., which we can amend if we're getting directed to niche sites that aren't relevant to us in terms of interest or knowledge.
One of my listed interests is home based businesses, which is very generic so I get comment requests for all kinds of things I know little or nothing about or am not interested in.
I always read the article in question and I always try come up with a way to make some relevant engagement based on what I've read, as though I'm interested in learning more when actually I'm not - simply because it helps my fellow affiliate to rank in Google.
I get frustrated when people confuse feedback with comments and there are numerous blog posts and trainings about that here.
It's a two way street though, and if I ask a site owner a question in one of my comments, I've found I often don't get an answer, which is disappointing. They're also not doing themselves any favours by not replying.
Some good points here - thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Rich :-)
Yeah, sometimes I don't get an answer either...I make an effort to reply because I want to be engaging y'know :)
Hopefully many WA members will read your post and learn. I think the only way to improve the comments is to penalize those that give bad ones. Maybe they could lose 50 cents for everyone that isn't approved. The issue around site comments has been a major concern since it's inception, it's driven people like myself away from it. Jim
I know that many users here have asked for an official tutorial on commenting and giving feedback but nothing yet. I hope something is done about that since it drives users from SiteComments like you said

Hi Ann. Thanks for taking the time to explain this. Im sure many people would find it very helpful and useful when doing comments.
Ive commented on a number of topics i know nothing about and as you say, the best thing to do here is ask some relevant questions.
Yup, that's what I've learnt since coming here and it seems to be doing alright for now :)
