Hi Alvin. I don't know how you do it but according to what kyle says, back links aren't a good thing these days and Google penalises it.
I'm still pretty new here, so can't give great info, but keywords seems to be the goose that lays the golden egg
It isn't a spammy once you don't overdo it and do the proper way, i.e. on good sites that already have some authority in Google.

When you're editing a post, to the right, towards the bottom should be the option to set a featured image. Use the image you would like to be the thumbnail (can be any size, wordpress will resize it for you). See if that works for you

As far as I know there is no limit and you can host as many sites as you wish. You just need to purchase the domains everything else is in the premium package
